George Washington refuses to be president, and suggests that despite his age, Benjamin Franklin should run instead.

After thinking it over for a few days, 83 year-old Franklin agrees, but only with the provision that he is able to choose his own vice president. He is concerned about his advanced age and dying in office.

The Congress agrees to the provision.

January 7

Franklin chooses Thomas Jefferson as his Vice President.
