The president of Brazil (Portuguese: Presidente do Brasil), officially the president of the Brazilian Nation (Portuguese: Presidente da Nação Brasílica) or simply the President of the Federation, is the head of state of Brazil. The president co-leads the executive branch of the government jointly with the Consul, and as well, is the commander-in-chief of the Brazilian Armed Forces, and simultaneously the Protector (the equivalent of mayor) of Trindade.
The president directs the foreign and defensive policies of Brazil and takes an active role in promoting their policy priorities to members of Congress via the Consul, who is responsible for the economic and domestic policies, formally being the one who signs and/or vetoes any federal legislation. In order to mediate the power of the president, the Council of Ministers was formed, led by the Consul who is generally appointed by the President.
The president also fulfills many several ceremonial duties, such as to host the state visit from a foreign head of state, and representing the country abroad. The image of the President is affirmed as the symbol of national unity and the embodiment of the state. The president also has a ceremonial personal standard, which is used during and after the presidency.
In contemporary times, the Brazilian president is widely seen as a rising political figure in the world, as the country that they rule is also a rising great power. The president also leads the nation with the fifth-largest economy by nominal GDP, possessing notable domestic and regional power.
Throughout history, Brazil had 42 presidents, on which 20 were indirectly elected by the Consulate, 21 were directly elected to the office, including the 42rd and current president, Joaquim Barbosa, while two presidents assumed the office after the death, resignation, and impeachment of the titular. The president Joaquim Barbosa was sworn on 12 March 2021 following the 2020 presidential election.
