Principia Moderni, or "The Beginning of the Modern" in Late Latin, was a map game beginning in the final days of the Middle Ages in Europe, and the early days of the Ming dynasty in China-- in 1420 C. E, a turbulent era; in other words, an era of change; an era in which power is cemented. The first game was perhaps the most successful map game on the wiki in terms of length, finishing without dying, and plausible expansions. However, it did have its problems, and it is now finished. Thus, this second game has been created. Welcome to Principia Moderni II.

All nations without names by them may be taken by new players immediately. Nations with normal names by them may not be taken by new players as they are already established main player nations, and cannot be played without permission or a revolt. Bolded names are international unions, with member states indented below. Tribal Names are italicized, and areas which are fragmented by being small states are underlined. Nations in civil disarray or collapsing nations have an attached note. If a player's name has a * besides it, it means that nation is a vassal/former colony that a player is controlling but is willing to let someone else play as if asked. Areas which ** are mod-controlled and players must ask permission to play them.

The Iberian Peninsula remains divided with Aragon focusing east, Portugal west, and Castille south, to a Granada that has convinced the Marinids and Zayyanids to help it against the Catholics.

England is on the run in France thanks to Joan of Arc (even though she was eventually captured and executed) and a new French alliance with Burgundy and Scotland. and now sits in fear as their enemies advance on their last major holding on the continent, Normandy. England is further worried after the successful Welsh revolt and continuous losses against France. The long war has weakened England, with Wales seizing independence and rebellion rising in Ireland. However France has suffered extreme damage and losses in the Hundred Years War, and their king has lost a lot of power with numerous areas having gained autonomy while the largest noble houses are almost independent and vying for the throne.

The vast conglomerate of states that is the Holy Roman Empire is disunited. Archduke Frederick V of Austria is able to grasp the title of King of the Romans and his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor is planned to happen in Rome in 1453. However the Luxembourgers are using their vassal's (Brandenburg and the Palatinate) votes to become Emperors themselves and Austria must deal with its succession crisis or fall apart like Bavaria. Meanwhile non-German states within the HRE feel abandoned and slowly drift away from the Empire.

The Ottoman Empire, having conquered much of Anatolia, now turns its attention on Constantinople, having developed their forces around the city for the last 20 years.

The Pope, sick of dealing with the squabbling dukes that rule parts of the Partimony of St. Peter, decides to slowly unite them within the Papal States, without their suspicion before it is too late.

Hungary is bordered by the HRE, Poland and the Ottomans, three huge, more powerful states. Venice has seized much of the Hungarian coastline, but Hungary can't retaliate thanks to the Venetian navy. However, the Hungarians might be able to take advantage of the succession war within the HRE, Moldavia, and Bohemia, where they have a strong claim. But first they must rebuild their military after their alliance with Serbia was devastated by the Ottomans.

The Teutonic Knights are disunited, the Prussian and Livonian orders disillusioned with each other, weakening them to a Poland-Lithuania that, though large and powerful, has only a coastline on the Black Sea. With Constantinople on the verge of falling, the Polish-Lithuanians need a Baltic port.

Denmark has united the Scandinavian nations and conquered several HRE states in the north. But the powerful Russia and the HRE are still threats, while a land link with Sweden's Finland is needed.

Novgorod is worried by the growing power of Muscovy who may soon be able to dominate the other lesser Russian states. However, both still are under the heel of the weakening Golden Horde.

Japanese pirates take a devastating toll on Chinese shipping thanks to the backward naval theory of the current Chinese Emperor that prevents China from doing anything. However, China is powerful beyond belief on land, with two vassals: Dai Viet and Korea. However Dai Viet is gaining strong independence movements helped by their recent destruction of the Champa Kingdom...

With vast amounts of Chinese influence, a Jurchen man rises from his tribe to unite his people.

The Khmer Empire has fallen, creating a possibility for Thai expansion to start going east instead of north, if they so choose.

India is in chaos after being sacked by the Timurid Empire. However, the Muslims have already devastated much of Hindu India, yet Vijaranagar still remains strong enough to resist...

The Mamluk Sultanate his at its peak, trying to keep their huge empire whole.

The Aztec have arrived in Central America from somewhere... Powerful warriors, they are hired by Zapotec city states to fight battles and with a decent amount of backstabbing they hold the most powerful position in Central America, envied by all other states. However, Chichen Itza, the most powerful of the Mayan City States, may yet be able to unite their brethren against this foe

In Africa, Ethiopia is the only Christian nation in an Africa dominated by Muslims and native religions. Ethiopia seeks to spread the word of the Lord, by force if necessary.

  • Scotland is glad to have allied with the French, and is hopeful that this alliance will weaken the English, who the Scots are rivals with in the power struggle over Great Britain and Ireland. Scottish King James II recognizes the Welsh independence, glad that England is losing control over other Celts. He also orders secret aid to be sent to any Irish who wish to revolt from English domination. Many Scots, spurred on by their dislike of the English, begin to discourage the English-like Scots language in favor of Scottish Gaelic. The University of Glasgow is founded this year. King James II works on weakening the nobles and focusing power on the monarchy, a task which is opposed by the powerful Douglas and Livingstone families. Alexander Livingstone II and Robert Livingstone are both executed, with Alexander I and the others all banished or imprisoned. However, many fear that there is no way for the king to increase his power without antagonizing the Douglasses, and that civil war and strife may follow as the Stewarts and Douglasses vie for control of the kingdom. The king gathers and prepares his armies, in case of war with either the Douglasses or the English. The chief factor of his preparations are his usage and implementation of new artillery technology.
  • Ashikaga Shogunate begins to build up their military and also expands into the rest of 本州 (Honshū), then entering/expanding into the new island right above them, which they name it 北海道 (Hokkaidō) and begin fighting some of the Ainu there. Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa asks for an alliance with Siam and Vijayanagar. Later Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa also attempts to stop the Japanese pirates from causing any more disruption. Meanwhile a folk teller in around OTL Sendai area tells a story about two satoris walking through a forest (this doesn't mean anything).
  • Fuman, a Jurchen chieftain, officially unites the divided Jurchen tribes through various means. He officially names the new nation Manchuria, and crowns himself as the first Emperor of Manchuria. The Manchurians begin to expand in the northeast towards the ocean.
  • Brandenburg decides to support Austria's claim to the throne, since they are German comrades, but is disappointed that its own house is not on the throne. To ensure continued existence of the HRE, all member states are strongly advised not to leave the Empire. Meanwhile, diplomats are sent to Austria to discuss a possible centralization or strengthening of the Empire.
    • You are a vassal of Luxembourg, you can only vote for them in Emperor elections.
    • Support. Not voting. There is a massive difference.
  • Austria is happy of Brandenburg's support, and the emperor meets with the emissaries, where they hash out a rough plan. The Emperor urges that all members of the HRE do not leave, as change is coming that will benefit them all.
  • The Bavaria-Munchen Principality supports the new Emperor on the condition that Bavaria-Munchen be aided in seizing the other areas of Bavaria to form a more united Bavaria. Emissaries are sent to Austria, and Brandenburg to cement a long lasting alliance with the two powers and to determine the new centre of the HRE. Emissaries are also sent to the Bavarian nations directly surrounding Bavaria-Munchen, in hopes of Uniting Bavaria without war.
    • You aren't an elector, you have no voice in the voting of a new emperor, you can only vote in the Reichstag for or against reforms.
    • I did not say vote, I said SUPPORT, there is a difference. Also what are the requirements to be an elector?
    • There are 7 electors, three are the most powerful bishoprics and three are the most powerful Germanic duchys. The last one is Bohemia. To become an elector you must gain power and then wait for another elector that is a duchy to get annexed.
  • China demands the ceasing of attacks from Japanese pirates, lest China be forced to take drastic action. Meanwhile, the military is expanded, especially the navy. Naval patrols escort large-sized ships.
    • Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa of the Ashikaga Shogunate is already beginning to attempt to stop the Japanese pirates and will stop them.
    • The new nation of Manchuria sends an envoy to the Chinese requesting the honor of establishing an alliance between their two nations.
    • Ah, it's good to be back in the Ming Dynasty.
  • Portugal starts to prepare its armies. Meanwhile, a settlement is established on the island of São Jorge, on the Azores archipelago.
  • Korea requests protection for its ships from Japanese pirates with China, and begins an overhaul of the political system.
  • The Castillian crown decided to prepare his army versus Granada, to march in the Reconquista. The recruitment will increase in northern and central peninsula. It sends a request of economic pact to Portugal and the Crown of Aragon. Without warning the Castilian troops venture into Granadian terrain.
  • The Emirate of Granada sends an alliance and a trade pact to the Mamluks and the Hasfids, while also ambushing the spanish troops that have entered there country unanounced while sending a few other troops and their allies' troops too attack Castille.
  • Aq Qoyunlu asked an alliance with the Mamluks and Granada. And offers to help contain the Spanish. Also offers economic pact to them. too. Meanwhile, Aq Qoyunlu expands 1000 km2 into Bedouin territory.
    • Muhammed IX accept all the offers as he would be very happy if Aq Qoyunlu would help against Castille.
  • The Zulu Kingdom begins to slowly expand into the surrounding regions, particularly into northern OTL Mozambique and OTL South Africa. The Zulu Army begins to recruit more troops. Improvement of the infrastructure of Zulu begins.
  • Henry IV is overthrown by Jack Cade's rebellion, and London is put by a few days under a pseudo-commune. But, under the menace of court lords and clergymen seeking for power, Cade opens gates to Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick and Richard, 3rd Duke of York. They both accept to gather a Parliament of the three estates (nobleman, clergy and people) and give it some powers to avoid abuses of power from the King, and Cade accepts to legitimate between his followers Richard of York as king Richard III of England and help sending the Lancasters away. As king, Richard proclaims a new Parliament composed by representatives of the nobility (majority), clergy (minority) and people. Warwick becomes Lord Speaker for the nobility, with power to propose new noble representatives, recognizes the Pope the power of naming the Cardinal Speaker, and designate the episcopal-ranked representatives of the Church, and otorgues Cade the title of Speaker of the Commons, with the power of choose representatives for the people, only with a previous voting of the Parliament or the royal assentment. Neville sends an ambassador to Denmark to congratulate the king for uniting the northern kingdoms and offer him support against any trouble, but alsoa sking his help against France. Neville himself travels to Caen and assasinates by his own hand the last Lancaster refugee, and then takes command of the English forces. Ambassadors offer Austria support if any illegitimate attempt to separate Frederick V from the throne of the HRE occurs, and asks Burgundy to rejoin England in the battle against France. The Anglo-Irish lords and English lords of Ireland start spreading in their dominions and other clans' dominions propaganda against the Scottish and any attempt of them to invade Ireland or even England. The king asks the Welsh to meet at a neutral place to talk about a possible recognition of their independence.
  • Aztec: A great drought begins in the Basin of Mexico, and the great leader of the Aztecs Moctezuma I declares that in a dream he had a vision of the Gods and they were not pleased with the tribute that the Aztecs had given them and so sent the drought to punish the Aztecs. Moctezuma believes that this means that more sacrifices to the Gods must be made however the drought stops them from properly mobilising an army. Moctezuma declares that the Aztecs must ready themselves for war and plans are made to take tribute from the southern Zapotec states, while they are stronger than those in the north, the tribute will be greater too.
  • Milan agrees to stay in the HRE and loyal to the new Emperor, if he agrees a unification of Genoa and Milan. We also want to declare that if the new Emperor corresponds to the caring wishes of his Italian servants, our loyalty will be his. Help is sent to Castilla and we ask the HRE to support England.
    • Simply declare your cares and concerns to the emperor, and he will try to find a solution towards them. The emperor thanks Milan for its support, and expresses support for the possibility of Milan's requests. Bavaria's demands are also considered, but only the emperor knows what he will do.
  • The Mamluk Empire agrees to establish an alliance with the Emirate of Granada and Aq Koyunlu. They send mild amounts of help to the Emirate of Granada, while a few other troops are sent to Cilicia in the border with the Ottoman Empire.
  • The Despostate of Epirus, seeing that the Ottomans are quickly becoming the prominent power in the Balkan area, begins beefing up their military. The Depost, Leonardo Tocco knows that the Epirians should not ignore the Renaissance that is currently sweeping Italy like a storm, and begins to model Epirus as a modern Italian state, not as a backwards Byzantine successor. He personally offers Venice an alliance.
  • Ranawijay, the King of Majapahit attempts to stablize his declining empire. The last important Hindu-Buddhist state in Indonesia, at a time when increasingly threatening Islamic sultanates are forming in the West. However, Majapahit's navy is still stronger than most of the sultanates, and stronger than most of the world (Most battles in Indonesia are fought at sea). Hindu Banjar, is pressured into accepting vassal status to Majapahit. Majapahit attempts to do the same with Sunda, but only the south-eastern third of Sunda breaks away from the rest of the nation and joins Majapahit's vassals. The Kings of Sunda immediately declare war on Majapahit. Majapahit requests help from fellow Buddhist and Hindu Powers: Vjayanagar, China, the Ashkiga Shogunate, and Siam, in defeating Sunda and the Islamic Sultanates in Indonesia.
    • Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa of the Ashikaga Shogunate (Japan) accepts Majapahit's offer of alliance and also sends supplies to help them.
    • Sunda was still Hindu/Buddhist/native religion, just like Majapahit, at this time.
    • You're right; Thanks for catching my mistake. I changed the post.
    • Vigaynagar rushes troops by the thousands as another hindu nation calls put to them. Many fleets are launched to aid the Mahapajit. They also ask to make this temporary alliance permanent along with important trading treaties.
  • Papal States: Under influence from Nicholas V, the citizens of the Papal States greatly look forward to unifying the lands of Rome and St. Peter. While an unsuspected violent aggression is not wished, several hundred military men are prepared at the border, and more and more men are enlisted. The Pope hopes that the nation, which would between both seas of Italy, would possibly encourage the growth of the Papal Navy.
  • Chichen Itza: The emperor of Chichen Itza begins to expand his power across the other Mayan city-states. Through arranged marriage and political agreements, the emperor hopes to gain more influence over the Yucatan.
  • Morocco: Entering the fith decade of the century, it becomes increasingly clear the large group of seperate, nationalistic tribes is near-impossible to unite, now only, and barely united against the pleas of help from their Islamic Friends in Granada. Various tribes protest at the choice of going on a war against the Iberic Christian Nations, though most support defending the Kingdom of Granada. Morocco asks to let a force of four-thousand to land in Granada, while both the Morrocan and Granada Navy cooperate in the defenses of ports.
  • (Someone check this, I'm horrible with Morocco.)
  • Georgia: The georgian royal family consolidates control over the nation. Georgia begins to improve and slightly expand the military focusing on pikemen and artillery to counter their neighbors extensive use of cavalry. An alliance and trade deal are sent to the other Orthodox nations of Novgorod, Muscovy, and the Despostate of Epirus.
    • How exactly are you going to be able to contact the Russians? The Mongol Hordes are in the way.
    • The Horde is collapsing in a rather bloody and chaotic manner a few messengers would prolly slip right throught the cracks.
  • France is glad that with the England losing and with numeorus supporting allies, the country can finally receive payback for the destruction they caused in the Hundred Years' War. They SECRETLY meet with the Welsh and Scottish, who suggest at invading and dividing England for themselves as the divine punishment for their action. However, the king is obviously aware of the massive destruction left behind. Thinking Joan of Arc would be able to produce a heir, he is considering for her to be a member of the royal family through a marriage of one of the princes. The king meets with his advisors and cardinals, telling them they will have much work to do once the war is over. The king plans to kick the English out of the last two territories before they launch the offensive onto England. The military begins the invasion of Normandy to take the capital of Rouen and chase the English out to sea. Once that is done, they will take Calais. All of this is done without mercy.
    • Joan of Arc is already dead. The moderator event was confusing, the victories she won were a couple decades ago.
    • The Scots state that they will back France, though they still have their own internal disputes.
    • Thought that would happen the next year. Hope you don't mind, I'll correct the mod event.
    • French Diplomacy: It asks the Scots to help improve relations by establishing a marriage between one of their princes and princesses.
    • Scotland is sad to say that they currently have no princes, and their king has just married. They will still be allies of the French against England nonetheles
  • Venice proposes an alliances with Poland-Lithuania, Denmark and France as it concerned with the power of the HRE which effectively surrounds the tiny merchant republic. Venice constructs more ships to defend the city and fortifies its coastal holdings. Venice offers sanctuary to the Byzantine Emperor and promises support should the Ottomans attack as the loss of Constantinople would be a blow to all Christian trade. Venice consolidates its takeover of Hanseatic assets across the HRE and now stands as the largest trade centre in Europe controlling the trade routes across the HRE, Central Europe and the Balkans. With vast amounts of wealth entering the republic the Doge, Francesco Foscari, is concerned at potential greed and jealousy from nearby nations and thus orders the republic to focus on its land forces, especially on the Milanese border. He however, is troubled by his son's imprisonment on Crete for bribery which has caused a decline in the Doge's attentiveness to government duties. The Council of Ten are ready to replace the Doge and following his son's second sentence this year, force Francesco to resign and vote in Dogo Pasquale Malipiero whose family is a rivals of Foscari's.
    • French Diplomacy: Although it was ironic how they used to be enemies, it sees the Ottomans as a potential threat for all of Europe and also allows Byzantine refugees in. They agree to Venice's request as they too, are concerned about the Holy Roman Empire.
  • Serbia: The entire country is in total disarray. For decades, the country has had almost no resemblance of any government - only loosely held by Serbian Despot, Đurađ Branković. The Despot had fled to Hungary, after the Ottoman Empire had ravaged the land of the Serbs. Branković is eager to get back Nándorfehérvár (Modern-Day Belgrade). However, Hungarian and Serbian Armies have been outright crushed by the brutal Ottoman Horde. Having no access to the sea, being surrounded by more powerful hostile states, and it appears that Hungary is becoming more and more unlucky, and may not be enough to save Serbia. Branković does not want Serbia to become an Islamic state, and a vassal of the Ottoman Empire. The Despot sends a secret messenger to Kraków in Poland, where we request an audience with King Casimir IV Jagiellon, to forge a secret alliance with Poland to protect Europe from the Turkish barbarians.
  • The indigenous Nabhani dynasty solidify their control of Oman, and Abul Hassan of Oman dies and is succeeded by Omar ibn al Khattab, who declares himself Sultan of Oman. The Sultan orders a map of the world to be made so the Sultan can get a better idea of how Oman stands the world. After a few months this is made, and the Sultan's cartographers present Sultan Omar ibn al Khattab with a grand map and a collection of stories, tales and histories of the world are presented alongside the map. The Sultan studies all these texts and maps carefully, learning much and leading the Sultan to believe that Oman must do its best to spread the glory of Islam. As such the Sultan vows to send aid to Muslim countries to help them in their wars against non-Muslim nations. As part of this plan Oman offers alliances to neighbouring Aq Qoyunlu and the Mamluk Sultanate. Oman also builds up its military, focusing a lot on the navy to allow Oman to safely communicate and trade with the rest of the world. With military protection more Omani merchants take to the seas to trade in India, Indonesia, Far east Asia and the eastern coastline of Africa. Oman expands southwards by 2,000 sq km as Omani herders and miners expand their operations into the desert, native Bedouin nomads are pushed out of this territory as they fear Omani military force being used against them.
  • Ethiopia: Emperor Zara Yaqob of Ethiopia begins centralizing power into his hands, placing rebellious ras' (Ethiopian equivalent of duke), on trial should they try to defy his will. Efforts to reform the awful standards of living of the peasant class are suggested. The emperor wishes to expand the empire, but knows that he cannot sustain it with poor farmlands, or maintain control of the lands with malnourished troops. The development of a royal highway to connect the imperial capital of Gondar with the holy city of Axum is begun, and the formation of an imperial army to begin expansion of the empire underway. Yaqob is especially interested in using gunpower weapons brought to his realm by the Portuguese, and seeks to build a gunsmith foundry in Gondar to begin supplying his armies with them. Ethiopia expands 1,500 sq km to the northeast towards the Red Sea in an effort to establish a port there.
  • Swiss Confederation: Builds up and consolidates military power, hoping to secure the SC as a long-lasting nation capable of defending and attacking with efficiency. The Swiss Confederacy also agrees to stay in the HRE under the current events and circumstances, but we may change our decision if we find the tastes unsuitable for our palates.
  • The Novgorodian Veche Pressures the Moscovite grand prince to sign a Ryad in order to maintian his position as the Prince in the Novgorodian lands, on pain of being run out of the position. The Ryad(somewhat of a precussor to a constitution) wthat would give him only the role of military commander in the case that the Veche agrees to assemble a druzhina for a military action, and appoint a tysychnik(a man born in Novgorod, and approved by the veche) to oversee most of the executive actions. The Boyar duma decides to purchase a phew arquebuses for the druzhina. Novgorod's small fleet of Kosh ships continues to roam the north, The veche also declares that the Novgorodan people refuse to pay taxes to a man born outside the novgorod Lands, or bribe them not to attack. The Novgorod people know that this is utlimately aimed at the golden horde, and know that they will either have to cross muscovy to get their taxes by force, or to cross the frozen north and bogs(the reason novgorod was not conquered by mongols in the fisrt place). the Novgorodian principality is gambling, and is hoping that Moscow's desire to get rid of the Tatar yoke is greater than its desire to take lands in novgorod filled with animals and expensive furs.
  • Vijaynagar little support for their present Maharaja but he manages to hold on for now. One of his first actions this year is to aid its fellow kingdom in the South East. Many ships are sent to help Mahapajit stay strong and many soldiers are sent. The new Maharaja also orders the army to be amped up and research be put into new technologies such as cannons and longbows. A Civil war breaks out in Navarra.

    • Sorry for having put a link, but i didn't knew how to explain this civil war. my only two sources either were very long, and unsuitable for a few lines, or so short that it barely explains something.
  • Ashikaga Shogunate continues to build up their military and also expands into 北海道 (Hokkaidō) and continues fighting some of the Ainu there. Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa continues to ask for an alliance with Siam and Vijayanagar. • The Holy Roman Emperor starts to send copies of the new treaty and plan towards centralizing the HRE to other members, and asks that they look at it and consider it. The Emperor, seeking to heal the schism and join east and west, announces his betrothal to the niece of the Byzantine Emperor (trust me, this is legitimate). The wedding, which can be attended by almost anyone, is scheduled to take place this September, if no noble objects. The Emperor would also like to talk to the Doge of Venice at his earliest convenience.
  • The alliance from Manchuria is accepted after a few months of decision-making. Shortly thereafter, China declares war on and invades the Oirat Khanate. Troops pour from China into the Khanate. Help from Manchuria and Korea is requested. China's vassal, Dai Vet, pledges troops to China for the cause.

  • The Castillian troops recede due to muslim power, so it is anticipated that they will lose the war if they continue like this. So Castilian diplomats propose a military alliance with Portugal, Aragon and Burgundy against Muslims. Besides Christian appeal against the "heretic scum" says to the papacy, but doubt their intervention. It also sits next to Aragon talk about a possible royal marriage in the near future. They appreciate the support that has been given Milan and say that it will consider in the future.
