The Progressive Party is one of the two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with its main historical rival, the Unionist Party.
It was formed in 1912 by Theodore Roosevelt and other liberal members of the Unionist and Democratic parties, as well as former members of the Populist Party.
Eleven presidents of the United States have been Progressives.
History[]
The party rose in the early 20th century during the rivalry between Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft.
After losing the vote, Roosevelt announced the formation of a new party dedicated "to the service of all the people." This would later become the Progressive Party. Roosevelt announced that his party would hold its convention in Chicago and that he would accept their nomination if offered. The new party took many of the Unionist’s Progressive members, as well as members of the Democrats who were dissatisfied with their party's continued poor performances in national politics. Roosevelt also received the endorsement of the Populist Party and following the election of 1912 the two parties merged. Roosevelt subsequently defeated President Taft, and House Minority Leader Champ Clark of the Democrats. Roosevelt took 253 electoral votes, against Taft's 110 and Clark's 21.
