The Republic of Quebec (French: République du Québec), commonly known as Quebec, is a nation located in eastern North America. Quebec is bordered by the United States to the south and Canada to the west. Quebec is generally regarded as the successor state to New France (a former French colony in North America). Between 1763 until gaining independence in 1840, Quebec was governed by the United Kingdom as the Province of Lower Canada.
