Quebec is a North American nation, and is the only majority French speaking nation in North America. It was proclaimed in 1963 but did the movement did not receive support from the Quebecois people until 1966. It was aided financially by the United States. Currently it is in a period of economic strength. Its capital is Quebec City and its largest city is Montreal.
Politics[]
The National Assembly of Quebec serves as the legislative body. It has 125 members and is unicameral, meaning it has no upper and lower house. Quebec's territory is divided into 125 electoral districts (ridings). In each electoral division, the candidate who receives the most votes is elected and becomes a Member of the National Assembly (MNA). This is known as the first-past-the-post voting system. There is debate over this system as it tends to create large disparities when compared to the popular vote.
The Prime Minister serves as head of government and is elected by popular vote. The President is chosen by the Prime Minister.
Political Parties[]
The Assembly is dominated by the Parti Québécois and the Quebec Conservative Party. The far left is the Democratic Socialist party , Québec solidaire. The far right is mainly represented by the Action démocratique du Québec.
