Qurtuba (Arabic: قرطبة) officially called the Republic of Qurtuba (Arabic: جمهورية قرطبة) is a nation in the Iberian Peninsula of Europe. It only borders Iberia, and has a population of 20 million. It is the richest country in Europe and the 9th richest country overall. It is also the two Muslim countries in Europe along with Sicily. It was originally a state of the Umayyad Caliphate before finally gaining independence.
Etymology[]
Borrowed from Arabic (Qurṭuba), which is also a borrowing from Latin Corduba, from Phoenician Qartuba; originally Qart-Juba, named after Numidian king Juba I.
History[]
Abd al-Rahman I became the emir of Qurtuba in 755 AD after six years in exile after the Umayyads lost the position of caliph in Damascus. Intent on regaining power, he defeated the area's existing Islamic rulers and united various local fiefdoms into an emirate, TBD.
