Raúl Castro

Raúl Modesto Castro Ruz (June 3, 1931 - April 21, 1965) was a Cuban revolutionary and politician, and younger brother of Fidel Castro. After Fidel's death in 1964, he fought for the country's leadership against Ernesto "Che" Guevara. In 1965, he was murdered, most probably by Guevara's assassins.

Guevara later claimed that Castro was secretly negotiating with the US government, and planned to give over the country to US authority after his rise to power, and because of this, his elimination was necessary. However, these claims were proven to be false.

Castro was married to Vilma Espín Guillois, with whom he had three children. Espín, pregnant with their fourth child at the time of Castro's death, attempted to flee to the US after Castro's assassination, and got political asylum there.
