Rafael Caldera Rodriguez (24 January 1916 – 24 December 2009) was a Colombian politician who served three terms as President, each from a different political party or grouping; as a Christian Democrat from 1970-1974, as head of a unity government during the Brazilian War 1982-86, and as head of his New Majority party he formed to run in the 1994 elections. Caldera is widely regarded as helping spearhead the Colombian victory over Brazil and is regarded as the nations' greatest President under the current Constitution. He is the only Colombian to be awarded both the US Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal, America's two highest civilian honors.
