August, 1991...

As the Soviet Union is on the decline. As the nation begins collapsing and Gorbachev's reforms are clearly seen as failures, most Soviet officials can see the writing on the wall. Lithuania had just succeeded the year before and independence of Georgia and other states are being finalized. Even worse, Russia itself might leave the union and even Gorbachev is considering the plan. The future seem dark and short for the nation.

A group of Hardliners decided to to forcibly seize control of the country from Mikhail Gorbachev, to save their nation from collapse. The coup leaders consisted of top military and civilian officials, including Vice President Gennady Yanayev, who together formed the State Committee on the State of Emergency (GKChP). They opposed Gorbachev's reform program, were angry at the loss of control over Eastern European states and fearful of the New Union Treaty, which was on the verge of being signed by the Soviet Union (USSR).

In our timeline, this plan failed and their coup collapsed in 2 days. In the following 4 months, the nation began dissolving as their states both succeeded and finalized succession from the Soviet Union. On December 25th, the flag of the Soviet Union was lowered from the Moscow Kremlin for the last time and replaced with the flag of Russia, moments after President Gorbachev announced his resignation, recognizing the Belovezha Accords and the Alma-Ata Protocol.

But what if this never happened? What if on that fateful August day, the coup succeeded and arrested Gorbachev, replacing him with Gennady Yanayev and stop the reforms they thought harmed the nation? What if the August coup succeeded and a Red Dusk fell of the Soviet Union.
