Galicia, or the Republic of Galicia (Galician: República de Galicia) was an independent republic located in northwestern Europe. The republic was formed after the occupation of Spain, thus being considered a post-Spanish state along with other states in the Iberian Peninsula. The country was formally succeded by the United Republics, with the jurisdiction of Galicia being controlled by the State of Galicia.

Before the independence, Galicia was a territory under the Spanish crown. The early XX century saw the rise and spread of the Galician nationalist ideas, similar to other regions in Spain (such as Aragon, Basque Country, Catalonia, and Andalusia). With the dissolution of Spain, Galicia was occupied by the United States, while Castile was occupied by the United Kingdom, and Aragon and the Basque Country were occupied by France. In 1949, Galicia vetoed the reunification of Spain and rejected the referendum of the Spanish crown, and in 1952, the Galician Assembly peacefully declared independence.

Throughout the rest of the century, Galicia and Portugal would sporadically be in contact to an eventual reunification. The Galician Language Association formalized rules to reintegrate the Galician language to the Portuguese language. The first proceedings that would lead to the United Republics started in 1978, with the Treaty of Braga. In 1998, the Congress of A Corunha was realized, defining 2002 as the deadline to a formal unification.
