The Republic of Maryland was established in 2012 by a joint team from the West African Union and the Federation of Liberia from the remains of the defeated nation of the Revoultionary Republic of Liberia

The Republic of Maryland had previously existed as a small African American nation which was founded in 1854, in 1857 it was united into what became the nation of Liberia. The name of Maryland remained as Liberia's Maryland County.

The Republic of Maryland is made up of the former Liberian counties of Maryland, River Gee and Grand Kru.

In late October 2012 the first meeting of the Governing Council of the Republic of Maryland takes place, it is made up of 15 members representing the WAU, 10 members representing the Federation of Liberia and 20 members representing the peoples of Maryland.

The first act of the new Governing Council was to set out an election timeline. It has been decided that election will happen in mid August 2013 with the newly elected govenment taking charge from the governing council on the 1st January 2014.
