History

Post-Doomsday

The Republic of New York was founded in 2011. Previously, the territory that now consitutes the Republic of New York belonged to the city-states of Binghamton and Ithaca. The two nations had made contact as far back as 1986, but they did not come together to form a single nation until a series of long discussions between the two nations from 2009 to 2011.

In early 2012, New York annexed Chemung County, which is home to the city of Elmira. Plans are being made for expansion into Steuben County by the end of 2012 and for expansion into Cortland County by the end of 2013.

Government

Type of Government

The current government of the Republic of New York is a democracy that is heavily based off of, if not a complete copy of, the pre-Doomsday nation called the United States of America, which controlled the territory the Republic of New York is located in before Doomsday occured.

New Capitol City

The government has aquired the abandoned town of Newark Valley, which is located roughly halfway between Binghamton and Ithaca, to use as the new capitol of the republic. The reason for this decision is is to prevent competitions between the cities of Ithaca and Binghamton for this right. (Elmira joined after the location for the capital was chosen.) It is to be renamed New Albany in honor of the pre-Doomsday capitol of New York. The government has created a layout for the planned community, and the major government buildings (such as the Capitol, the Presidential residence and the Supreme Court building) have all been designed. Construction is currently occuring, with an estimated completion date of 2015.

Political Parties

The political parties of the Republic of New York are direct carbon copies of the political parties of the pre-Doomsday United States. The major political parties, as they were in the pre-Doomsday United States, are the Republican and Democratic parties. Tioga and Chemung counties tend to vote for Republican candidates in elections. Tompkins County, with its large amount of college students, tends to vote for Democratic candidates in elections. Broome County is neither firmly Republican or Democratic, and is thus a "swing" county.

Military

The Republic of New York inherited the militaries of the city-states of Binghamton and Ithaca when the nation was created. As such, the military of New York is small and is composed mostly of those who formerly served in the armed forces of Binghamton and Ithaca.

Economy

The economy of the Republic of New York is diverse and large for a nation of such small size. Education is a major employer, due to the fact that Ithaca and Binghamton have several places of higher education that survived Doomsday. The technology buisness is also a major employer, as Binghamton contained a major office of IBM before Doomsday occured. Other major industries include the pharmecutical industry, agriculture and the growing "fracking" sector.

Education

New York is blessed with one of the best educational systems in the former United States. Most, if not all colleges in the region, survived Doomsday relativley intact. Colleges such as Cornell University, which was a member of the Ivy Leauge pre-Doomsday, Binghamton University and Oneonta College (formerly SUNY Oneonta), have become major education centers for the surrounding region. For those who are not old enough for college yet, public schools, which are operated by the town/city/village that the school is in, are operated for children. All children in New York who are between the ages of 6 and 16 must attend school.

Transportation

Most people in New York do not own cars because of the lack of oil in the area and the expense of importing the oil. Instead, most people rely on trains and ferries for intercity transport within New York itself. For short distances, most people will ride a bicycle or just walk. Airplanes are not in use for for domestic travel due to the small size of the nation.

International Relations

New York has relations with many other nations despite its small size. Some of these nations are:
