Politics[]
The Ragusan republic is basically led by the Grand Council, a polity consisting of all male adults of the patrician families. However due to a union of a large enough amount of members, the Ragusans started reforming their government in 1400.
The Grand Council was reduced to become a solely electoral council. The Small Council consisted of 11 members which elected a Knez among themselves for a month, however the Council was reelected every year and members couldn't serve for 2 years after serving one year. The Rector, alongside the Small Council, had ceremonial and executive functions. The Senate is the legislative body of 45 members over the age of 40 which held their position for 1 year after which they would have to wait 2 years for reelection. Lastly, the judicial branch was divided into the Civil and Criminal Court, each consisting of 6 members, elected every year without pause between reelections. Appeals could be made to the Small Council.
A special function was the magistrate function called provveditori, which were elected among patricians over the age of 50 who would serve until they were able to do so by the Grand Council, but then wouldn't be able to serve in any other position. They are able to temporarily suspend a decision by the Small Council and bring it to the Senate.
