History[]

Fall of the Qing and Period of Disunity[]

After the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912, the Republic of China was established. In 1918, upon hearing the news of Lenin's death, Sun Yat-sen was imprisoned in the Imperial Palace in Beijing and Yuan Keding, Yuan Shikai's eldest son, established himself as the Emperor of China and created the Empire of China. In the northwest, Communists with the help of some Bolshevik exiles seized northwestern Manchuria and declared it the Chinese Soviet Republic. While in Inner Mongolia, the People's Republic of China was formed. Near the Korean border, a group of ethnic Koreans seeking to establish a Korean Chinese dynasty revolted against the Empire of China and declared the Daehan Jung-gug Jeguk under the Emperor Yi Un.

Rise of the Nationalists[]

In 1919, the Nationalists in Nanjing revolted against the Empire and seized the city. They re-established the Republic of China and elected Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek as President-General of the restored Chinese Republic. Chiang westernized and modernized rapidly, in hopes of being able to out-compete the other Chinese nations and eventually swallow them up.
