The Republican Party of the United States, commonly known as the Republican Party, is one of two major political parties in the United States. Founded on March 20, 1854 by several former Whigs and other affiliated politicians, the party has had an edge in American politics since the Civil War.
To this day, it still mantains over a 150 year record of domianting voter registration, and has domianted the American political landscape since the Civil War. Much of it's support comes from Unionist areas during the Civil War.
It's official party platform is center to center right, is socially liberal and fiscally conserative, with supporting lowering taxes but also supporting issues like gay marriage.
5 factions within the Republican Party are the Rockefeller Republicans, as stated, the main and Rockefeller Republican wing, Taftist Republicans, conserative on numerous issues socially and fiscaly but isolationist, the Conservative Republicans, which are the liberal, conserative, center and right-wing of the party, the Prog Republicans, which are socially progressive and fiscally moderate, and the New Right, a right-wing populist branch. Most of the Republican presidents since the 1950s have been Rockefeller Republicans, but John McCain was a Conservative Republican. The New Right is the weakest of the branch and has very little power within the party, only conisting of 5 members as of 2017.
