Rhode Island, officially the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, was the 13th state to join the United States of America. Originally the first state to declare their independence, they became a state on May 29, 1790. Its capital and largest city was Providence. Rhode Island had a population of 948,000 in 1980.

Pre-Doomsday

Rhode Island never really had an economy, but it was famous for clam chowder and being the first in literally everything imaginable related to colonial-era America. It was the first colony to ban slavery, the first to declare independence from Great Britain, but was only the 13th state admitted to the initial US… out of the original 13 states. Some superstitious folk say this small fact was the reason the state would suffer so badly in World War 3. Anyway, more firsts included the first auto race on a track, first Baptist church, first synagogue in the US, first street to be lit by gaslight in the USA, first automobile parade… Really, we have a lot to thank Rhode Island(which isn’t, contrary to name, an island).

Doomsday

On September 25, 1983, Rhode Island was struck by several Soviet nuclear missiles. Providence and the US Navy training center Newport were hit by missiles, and other cities including Warwick and Cranston were destroyed . These missiles obliterated nearly the entire state's population, and the resulting fallout covered most of the state. The state's government was also destroyed. Most of the state today is now an abandoned wasteland. Fortunately, a few citizens managed to survive after Doomsday, mainly on Block Island.

Successor States

Outer Lands

The Outer Lands are a loose federation of five states who work together. A founding member of the federation is Block Island, which is now an Outer Lands state. Initially after Doomsday, the island's residents fled to Martha's Vineyard and Long Island, but the population slowly moved back. Block Island now has a population of around 750. The capital city of New Shoreham is located on the island.

Vermont

The Republic of Vermont has sent scouts to explore Rhode Island in 1996, and discovered that virtually all of Rhode Island is a wasteland. The Republic now claims the former state.
