Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911 -August 19, 2009) was an American actor and politician who served as the 40th President of the United States from 1979 to 1989. A Republican, Reagan previously served as the 40th Vice-President of the United States from 1977 to 1979 and as the 34th Governor of California from 1967 to 1975.
Before entering politics, Reagan was a Hollywood actor and starred in many movies, and twice served as President of the Screen Actors Guild in the 1940s and 1950s.
Reagan defeated Fmr Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter in the 1980 presidential election and Sen. Gary Hart in 1984, winning both in an unprecedented landslide victory. He would also be the first inter-term President to later be elected for two full terms as President of the United States.
Reagan presided over the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, the end of the Cold War, the Iran-Contra affair, and many other issues. Reagan also nominated Sandra Day O'Connor to be the first female Supreme Court justice in 1987. He would also be involved with helping his successor, George H.W. Bush, with many issues of his presidency, such as his decisions in the Gulf War.
