Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911 - June 5, 2004) was an American actor and politician who served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1981 to 1989. A Republican, Reagan previously served as the 34th Governor of California from 1967 to 1975 after a career as a Hollywood actor and union leader. He would defeat his Democratic Challenger Jimmy Carter in the 1980 Presidential Election in an 448-89 Electoral Vote and succeeded Incumbent President Gerald Ford. Reagan would run again in 1984 and would beat Senator Mondale with a higher result then 1980 with Reagan securing a 494-44 Electoral Vote.
20 years after Reagan won his Second Term as President, he would make a historic decision to the American People and announce he would run for a third term as President of the United States, with Reagan's announcement making him a major challenger to President Jack Kemp and Vice-President John McCain, a decision that would be seen as controversial, as it would be seen as a bad decision for three reasons, those being
- Reagan would be the first President since Franklin D. Roosevelt to run for a third term under his party for President and would be breaking the 22nd Amendment (should he had won the Nomination)
- It had been a decade since he announced to the nation that he had Alzheimer's and would be a scare to the American People to have a Presidential Nominee whom did not have the same sense of memory then when he served as President in the 1980s.
However, others viewed it as a great decision for Reagan to run for a third term for a few reasons, with those being
- Many people around the country feeling that the country was in a state of decline since Reagan had left D.C and Dukakis became President
- He was still very popular with the American People and was known as one of the Top 3 Presidents of the Cold War along with Henry A. Wallace & Dwight D. Eisenhower.
- Reagan was also one of the most well-known Presidents throughout the history of the United States, with the other Presidents achieving this status are George Washington, Henry Clay, Martin Van Buren, John C. Fremont, John C. Breckinridge, Abraham Lincoln, James G. Blaine, William Jennings Bryan, Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, James M. Cox, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Henry A. Wallace, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Barry Goldwater, Gerald Ford, Bob Dole, Micheal Dukakis, Al Gore & Donald Trump
