Russia (Russian: Россия), officially the Russian Empire (Russian: Российская империя), is a transcontinental country in Eastern Europe and Northern Asia. The capital and largest city is Moscow.

The East Slavs emerged as a recognisable group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries AD. The medieval state of Kievan Rus' arose in the 9th century. In 988, it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire. Rus' ultimately disintegrated, and the Grand Duchy of Moscow rose during the 15th century. By the 19th century, the nation had vastly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration to evolve into the Russian Empire, the third-largest empire in the world. In December 1825, the First Civil War broke out, which eventually resulted in the victory of constitutionalists, transforming the empire into a federal constitutional monarchy. Russia later joined the Allied powers in World War I, emerging victorious in 1915, however at a relatively large cost of lives and resources.

In the 1920s, political instability ran rampant in Russia, as the country experienced economic decline, especially with the Great Depression. In 1933, Konstantin Rodzaevsky was elected into power, abolishing the monarchy and proclaiming the State of All-Slavic Russia, while all Tsarist loyalists escaped to Alaska. All-Slavic Russia started World War II, and began a mass genocide of all Germanic and Jewish groups. Eventually, the Second Civil War toppled the regime and established a provisional government, which then collapsed into another civil war, splitting Russia along the Urals. On 24 April 1985, East Russia invaded West Russia, leading to the outbreak of World War III. After the end of World War III with the victory of the Allies, Russia was reunified.

Russia is a federal constitutional monarchy and a great power. Russia is a member of the United Nations.

History[]

Early years (1721-1762)[]

Peter I by Kneller

Peter the Great, the first Russian emperor.

The Russian Empire was proclaimed by Tsar Peter of Russia on 2 November 1721 following Russia's victory in the Great Northern War. During the short reign of Peter, the new and former capital of Russia, Saint Petersburg, began to flourish.

In 1735, war broke out between Russia and the Ottoman Empire, ending in 1739 with the Treaty of Niš, in which Russia gained control of Azov and Zaporozhye in exchange for Russia renouncing its claims to Bessabaria and Crimea.

Expansion of Russia under Catherine the Great (1762-1803)[]

Catherine II by J.B

Catherine the Great.

The reign of Catherine II (known as Catherine the Great) is known for turning Russia into a great power that gained more territory. Meanwhile, more wars took place between Russia and the Ottoman Empire such as in 1768 in which Russia won the war in 1774 gaining territory from the Northern Ottoman Empire while the Crimean Khanate became a Russian client state until annexation in 1783.

Russia had other disputes with Persia thanks to the Caucasian territory, as in 1783 the Treaty of Georgievsk was signed between Russia and the Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti, which led to the fact that Kartli-Kakheti became a Russian protectorate. In April 1796, another war broke out between Russia and Persia, but it turned out badly for Russia because Catherine died in November and her successor Paul decided to order the soldiers to retreat back to Russia. Paul was later murdered in 1801. Russia later gained control of the Caucasus by defeating Persia in another war in 1813.
