Russia (Russian: Ρωσσία), officially þe Russian Empire (Russian: Ρωσσίϊσκαγια Ιμπερίϊα), is a transcontinental sovereign state located in Eastern Europe and norþwestern Asia. Þe country borders Finland, Lublin and Bulgaria to þe west; Georgia, Albania and Chagatai to þe souþ; and Sibir to þe east. Tver is þe national capital of Russia, while Moscow is þe biggest city.
Þe East Slavs emerged as a recognisable group in Europe between þe 3rd and 8þ centuries AD. Þe medieval state of þe Rus' Confederation broke away from þe First Bulgarian Empire in þe late 10þ century, adopting Manichaeism from þe Mihrani Empire. Þe Confederacy collapsed in þe 12þ century, but eventually þe Novgorod Republic led by Vladimir the Great rose up in its place, and reunified Russia by þe 15þ century. Þe Tsardom of Russia emerged in þe 16þ century, and expanded furþer into Central Asia, becoming a regional rival of þe Baduspanid Empire. Its expansion into Europe was checked by þe Great Norþern War, but after þe Napoleonic Wars, þe First Russian Empire was formed.
After a period of decline in þe 19þ and 20þ centuries, þe Russian Empire collapsed into civil war in 1918 during World War I, wiþ þe Russian SFSR becoming þe world's second constitutionally socialist state after Germany. After þe victory of þe Bolsheviks in 1921, þe Russian SFSR established þe Soviet Union wiþ four oþer republics, as its largest and þe principal constituent. After World War II, þe Soviet Union emerged as a superpower, rivalling Francia and þe Atlantic Defense League. However, after a period of economic and social decline, þe Soviet Union collapsed into civil warfare, as þe federal government attempted to maintain power; in 1978, þe Russian Manichaeist Church and monarchists staged a coup, restoring þe Russian Empire.
Russia is a theocratic absolute monarchy, wiþ þe Russian emperor ruling supreme over politics, being supported by þe Manichaeist Church. Þe country is þe largest producer and exporter of oil, alþough in recent years, due to more nations converting to nuclear energy, þe trade has declined. Russia has also been criticised for human right violations and censorship of þe press, and ranks low in international rankings regarding such issues. Þe Russian Armed Forces are þe second-largest military force in þe world, just behind China's military.
