San Martín is the Capital; the primate city; and the social, economic and cultural center of Santiago, located on Berkner Island. Since 1948, the city has also functioned as a State, giving it increased self-government. The city's Mayor also fills the role of the State's Estadista, one of the highest government roles in the country
Notable landmarks include the country's Capitol Building, the main government building and the site of the National Assembly; the Auditorio Siglo (Century Hall), the official residence of the President; and the Señorío Lyndon (Lyndon Manor), the residence of the city's Mayor.
Geography[]
San Martín is, relative to its small population, a fairly large city. It is situated on the southwestern coast of Berkner Island; and is mostly spread along the shoreline, without reaching very far inland. Unlike many major Port Cities, San Martín does not lie across an estuary, or within a bay. This is because it originated as a small coastal town, without any major shipping capabilities; and its growth into a major City was unexpected.
Like most of Santiago (particularly the islands), San Martín is very low above sea-level, and has been severely affected by flooding in the region.
