Sandalia, officially the Federative Republic of Sandalia (Portuguese: República Federativa do Sandalia) is a sovereign country located in Australia. It lacks land borders, but shares maritime borders with Polynesia and Jansland.
Originally inhabited by a large group of unorganized native tribes located throughout the continent, the territory of modern-day Sandalia was settled by the Portuguese Empire around the year 1640, with its existence being suggested by maps made years prior. After failed attempts of colonizing the land by the Japanese, Sandalia remained a Portuguese colony for over 200 years until the 19th century, when, in the middle of the Second Great War, Portugal surrendered to Napoleon I, which made the Empire economically dependent of France, angering the colonists. Thanks to the distance of the colony to Europe, Sandalia was able to remain mostly unaffected by the constant political turmoil of the rest of the world. However, over the rest of the century, the nation faced many conflicts related to their form of government, leading to many coups d'état across its early history and different ways of democracy being implemented, finally establishing a federal presidential constitutional republic in 1889. During the Cold War and unlike its neighbouring nations, Sandalia decided to remain its historical policy of neutrality, not supporting neither the United States nor Germany, allowing for bigger economic growth coming with collaboration with both parties.
Sandalia is the second most populated, but richest nation in Oceania. It is considered a middle power, a successfully industrialized country and a leading nation in both the Lusosphere and the South Pacific, having a GDP compared to some in Europe and Muqaddas. Sandalia consists of 8 provinces; presidents can be elected to two consecutive terms that last 4 years.
Etymology[]
The exact origins of the name of Sandalia are unknown, although there are different theories on the subject. The most commonly accepted hypothesis takes inspiration in the Rhomanian explorer José do Fuca, who pled allignence to the Portuguese Crown in 1555; when exploring the Indian Ocean, José shared to his crew many stories about the old Greek gods, making a special emphasis on the God Hermes who had a special connection with his sandals. "Sandalia" literally translates to "sandal" which is odd for the name of a new colony, making most experts agree on thinking that it was some kind of homage to Fuca.
For this reason, what is known as "sandals" in English or "sandálias" in Portuguese is instead called an "alparca" by those born in the continent.
