Scotland, officially the Kingdom of Scotland, is a country in northwestern Europe traditionally said to have been formed in 843. Scotland occupies the northern third of the island of Britain as well as several other islands. Scotland has historically been at odds with its southern neighbor, England, with their most recent war having ended in the 1940s. Scotland also has maritime borders with Ireland and Scandinavia.
Modern Scotland was formed in the aftermath of the Scottish Revolution of the 1960s. The Revolution marked the birth of a democratic Scottish state and the end of the strong royal authority that had previously dominated the nation. Scotland maintains close relations with Rome, Ireland, and Scandinavia while remaining wary of England.
