Sean Burton (b. April 23, 1974) is an American Politician who is serving as Governor of Georgia since 2015. He is the son of Former Governor-Senator Henry Burton. Sean although a Republican has been recognized by both major parties as a Moderate and a Great Compromiser. He was the State’s first Republican Governor in 20 years.

Early Life

Sean Murphy Burton was born on April 23rd, 1974 out of wedlock to Actor Henry Burton and dancer Alice King (1952). He was raised by his father and attended Berkeley University in International Commerce out of which got his master’s degree in 1993.

Army Service, Business and Family Life

Sean enlisted in the Air Force in 1993 and went on one tour where he got the airman’s medal and achieved the rank of airman, he got out in 1997 and moved to Georgia where his dad had been elected Governor 3 years prior. He opened the Burton Hotel in Atlanta which had 4 star accommodation. He married Georgia Kentman, daughter of the Speaker of the State Senate in 1998 and in 2000 the couple had Henry Burton II. In 2001 another Burton Hotel was opened in Columbia, South Carolina and in 2002 the couple had twins; Sean Murphy II and Cara Anne Burton. A Burton Hotel was opened in Hamilton, Bermuda in 2005 which got a massive influx of tourist after is was a Prize on the Wheel of Fortune in 2006.

Political Career

State Senate

In 2008 Burton was elected to the Georgian state senate for the 7th district, as a Republican as the incumbent, Henry Smith had run for the open senate seat. Burton had won the election with 57% of the votes against Mary McFrei. He spent most of his time backing infrastructure bills and was a familiar face in the television which gave him a state-wide audience.

Lieutenant Governor

In a town hall meeting Burton announced his candidacy for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia, whilst most Republicans where running for Governor Sean saw no way in beating popular Lieutenant Governor Joshua Derrick, he won the primary when the only other candidate, Jerry Coman, realtor dropped out. Burton faced Yvette Alman in the General election but due to his father’s immense popularity he won with 51.2% of the votes. He spent most of his term at odds with Governor Derrick, blocking his laws and getting his own passed through like the preservation of his father’s policies. In January, 2013 Burton announced that he’d try to unseat Derrick. Immediately the Republican Party went behind him whilst Derrick was challenged for his nomination by Kate Francis, a School Principal and barely won.
