Post Doomsday[]
The Senegambia coalition continued until 1998, when it broke down over Senegal's desire to form the West African Union with Senegambia as a single member. President Abdou Diouf maintained Senegal's devotion to human rights and democracy and kept Senegal as a relative bright spot in the chaos of the world. In 1999 along with Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, and Togo, it formed the West African Union.
