The Shoshone Governorate (Russian: Шошонская губерния, romanized: Shoshonskaya guberniya), also referred to simply as Shoshone (Шошон, Shoshon), is one of the 19 governorates of the Alaskan Democratic Federative Republic. It is bordered by Baranof in the north; the United States (via Absaroka and Jefferson) in the east; Mexico (via Lago Salado and Vallejo) and Texas in the south; and Oregon in the west. Lesnoy is the gubernial center and most-populous city.

Name[]

The governorate gets its name from the native Shoshone people. The word itself derives from sosoni (сосони), a Shoshone word meaning "high-growing grasses." Some neighboring tribes called the Shoshone the "Grass House People" (based on their traditional homes). The Shoshones call themselves Newe (нывы), which means "people."

Due to the Shoshone's land spanning across the borders of Alaska, Mexico, and the United States; the people and (by extension) the governorate are called different names depending on the language. In English, the preferred spelling is "Shoshone" (with an "E") and is commonly pronounced as shoh-SHOH-nee (/ʃoʊˈʃoʊniː/). In Russian, the name is Shoshon (Шошон), which is pronounced sheh-SHON (/ʃɐˈʃonː/).
