The Socialist Party is one of two major contemporary political parties in the United States, along with the Democratic Party. Formed in 1901 by Eugene V. Debs and a coalition of socialists from the Democratic and National parties, the Socialist Party started off as a smaller party that never hold a stronghold in Congress prior to World War I. During the war, the Socialists began to gain popularity among the workers and farmers, giving way to the party's rise to power by the end of the decade.
