With few exceptions, most societies between 387 BC and 13 AD were based around a ruling class and the rest. While as noted on the economics page, capitalism did exist, this was rarely enough for the class system to even notice. The two main exceptions to this rule are Carthage, which was run via trade, and the Senone republic, arguably the world's first well known and successful republic.
