The Republic of South Carolina, officially South Carolina, is a country in the southeastern region of central North America. The state is bordered to the north by the U.S. state of North Carolina, to the south and west by Georgia, across the Savannah River, and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean.
South Carolina became the eighth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, on May 23, 1788. South Carolina became the first state voted to secede from the Union on December 20, 1860. After the American Civil War, it was readmitted into the United States on June 25, 1868, and in 1972, re-declared secession from the United States, paving the way for its independance today.
South Carolina's GDP as of 2013 was $183.6 billion, with an annual growth rate of 3.13%. South Carolina is composed of 46 counties and divided into four federal districts. The capital is Columbia with a 2016 population of 134,309; while its largest city is Charleston with a 2016 population of 134,385. The Greenville-Anderson-Mauldin metropolitan area is the largest in the nation, with a 2016 population estimate of 884,975.
South Carolina is named in honor of King Charles I of England, who first formed the English colony, with Carolus being Latin for "Charles".
South Carolina is known for its 187 miles of coastline, lush gardens, historic sites and Southern plantations, colonial and European cultures, and its growing economic development. As such, it is considered one of the richest states of the the 1972 secessionist states and is doing a lot better than some of its other Southern counterparts such as Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama.
In addition, whilst still under a socially conservative Christian-influenced government, the Republic of South Carolina is also considered the most socially progressive state of all the Dixie countries, where racial segregation and discrimination is illegal. In addition, school prayers and Bible studies are optional, rather than federally mandated as in the other Dixie countries.
Still, the state rejects same-sex marriage, abortion and Islam.
Culture[]
Like the rest of the Dixie countries, South Carolina's culture is predominantly of Anglo-Celtic and Anglo-North American stock.
South Carolina is known as one of the capitals of Anglo-North American culture, with many European colonial buildings in tact, thus, making it the most popular tourist destination in the entirety of the Dixie countries.
