The islands of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands is a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic, just west of South America. It is one of the South Atlantic territories of the United Kingdom, alongside with the Falkland Islands.
History[]
Pre-World War III[]
During the Falkland Islands war in April to June 1982, the British overseas territory was invaded by Argentine forces along with the Falkland Islands. The United Kingdom was quick to respond, sending a naval task force to reclaim its South Atlantic possessions. Britain succeeded in retaking the islands, but at the challenge of losing some naval vessels from Argentine Exocet anti-ship missiles.
The two territories would remain purely British and anti-Argentine even up to the breakout of World War III in June 1989.
World War III[]
The diplomatic relations of the United Kingdom and Argentina were still frozen when World War III broke out in 1989. As the war expanded to the Atlantic, there was a serious discussion in the British Parliament of reinforcing the Falklands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands just in case of Argentina attempting to re-invade in spite of a seven-year gap. To make things sure, a small task force was sent to RAF Ascension in the middle of the south Atlantic Ocean. Citizens were also trained basic combat skills, such as operation a firearm, first-aid, survival, and following orders.
CIA documents revealed in 2009 that Argentina did in fact plan to re-invade the Falkands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The United Kingdom issued an ultimatum to Argentina that it would suffer the full force of the might of the British Empire should it try to re-invade. This was backed up by the United States, in which the George H.W. Bush administration would pressure Argentina not to attempt a second invasion or it would cut economic or trade ties to the country.
