Russia (Russian: Россия; Rossija; Rossiya), officially known as the Soviet Russian Tsardom (Russian: Советское Российское Царство), is a vast country in Europe that blends communism with monarchism. Its capital and largest city is Moscow (Russian: Москва), which stands on the Moskva River in Central Russia.

The East Slavs emerged as a recognised group in Europe between the 3rd and 8th centuries CE. The first East Slavic state, Kievan Rus', arose in the 9th century, and in 988, it adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantine Empire. Rus' ultimately disintegrated, with the Grand Duchy of Moscow growing to become the Tsardom of Russia, which lasted until 1918. Thus, with the Russian Revolution in 1917, the Tsardom evolved into the Soviet Russian Tsardom on December 25, 1918, which still exists today but has a history of never annexing the Khanate of Siberia since the 16th century, with Siberia proving too large and powerful for Russia to invade ever since. Russia eventually gave up on invading Siberia altogether in the early 20th century thanks to the Russian Revolution, finally acknowledging its superpower status after almost four centuries of attempted invasions. The first Tsar of a Soviet Russia was Alexei II & I following his father's abdication in 1918. Throughout the 1920s towards the early 1980s, Russia established socialist states and expanded its influence throughout Eurasia, before most broke apart during the Cold War. Many states are still economically reliant on Russia to this day as a result. Ever since mid-1919, the Soviet Russian Tsardom has implanted censors and embargoes on prohibited content, especially within the realm of media, in which it continues doing so today.

Russia is a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and the leading member state of post-Soviet organisations such as CIS and the CSTO. It possesses the largest stockpile of nuclear weapons and has the third-highest military expenditure. Russia is generally considered a great power and is a regional power, although it ranks somewhat low in measurements of democracy, human rights and freedom of the press internationally. The country also has relatively high levels of perceived corruption, but as of 2024 AD, Russia has a high-income economy which ranks eleventh in the world by nominal GDP and sixth at purchasing power parity, relying on its vast AI, energy, and mineral resources; the world's third-largest for oil production and natural gas production.
