The Soviet Union, officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or USSR (CCCP), and occasionally Russia, is a nation located in Europe and Asia. It shares borders with Finland, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Romania to the east, Turkey, Kurdistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia and China to the south, and as North Korea to the southeast, as-well as sharing maritime borders with Japan and the United States.
The country is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party of the Eurasian Union, with Moscow as its capital within its largest and most populous republic, the Russian SFSR.
Other major urban centers are Leningrad (Russian SFSR), Kiev (Ukrainian SSR), Minsk (Byelorussian SSR), Tashkent (Uzbek SSR), Alma-Ata (Kazakh SSR) and Novosibirsk (Russian SFSR). It is the largest country in the world, covering over 22,402,200 square kilometres (8,649,500 sq mi), and spanning eleven time zones.
