The Soviet Union, officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), is a Socialist State located in Northern and Central Asia. The USSR borders the Russian Democratic Republic, Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia, the PRC, Korea and Japan. It also shares maritime borders with the United States across the Bering Strait.
Since 1948, the Soviet Union has generally been governed by collective leadership - a group consisting of the Party General Secretary, the Soviet Premier and the Chairman of the Presidium. This type of leadership is intended to prevent the cult of personality associated with the rule of Joseph Stalin, who was deposed in 1948 by a coup’d’etat. While the the cult of Stalinism has since been disowned, many aspects of his rule has been incorporated into the administration - the media is strictly controlled by the state, and the activity of citizens are highly supervised by the Committee for State Security (KGB).
The country is a one-party state, governed by the various Communist Party branches with Novosibirsk as its capital in its largest republic, the Siberian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (Siberian SFSR). The USSR is comprised of 11 “Union Republics”, which are controlled by their respective Soviet Councils. However, the main power of the Soviet Union is in the Supreme Soviet, which creates a reasonably centralised state.
History[]

Joseph Stalin (1878-1949), the dictator of the Soviet Union from the 1920s until the coup’d’tat of 1948.
In the last year of his rule (1948), Joseph Stalin became increasingly erratic and paranoid of his surrounding ministers and doctors. The USSR became increasingly anti-Semitic and an “Anti-cosmopolitan campaign” began against the Jews, who were labelled as “Rootless cosmopolitans” - as traitors to communism and nationalism. In 1947, Stalin authorised “Operation Eastwind”, which was intended to transport all Soviet Jews to the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in order to reduce the influence of the Jews in Soviet communities.
