The Spanish Federal Republic (Spanish: República Federal Española), colloquially known as Spain (España), is a sovereign state located in the Iberian Peninsula of Southwestern Europe. The nation is bordered by the Basque Republic and France in the north; Catalonia in the east; Gibraltar (an overseas territory of the United Kingdom) in the south; and Galicia and Portugal in the west. Madrid is the capital and largest city.
Following the Republican victory over the Nationalist in the Spanish Civil War, a Soviet-aligned communist state gradually developed. During World War II, German and Italian forces invaded Spain, which turned into a guerilla war throughout much of the conflict. During their liberation of Spain, the communists would occupy and annex the Principality of Andorra.
During the Cold War, the Spanish Socialist Republic (República Socialista Española) would cooperate with the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc. Spain was a member of the Warsaw Pact but would leave in 1968 due to political differences with Moscow and their isolation from the rest of the pact (similar to Albania).
Spain began their liberalization in the late-1980s. This would cause conflict between Madrid and the autonomous republics — Basque, Catalonia, and Galicia. The three autonomous republics would declare their independence in the early 1990s.
