The Kingdom of Spain is one of two European nations located in the Iberian Peninsula and the founder of the global Spanish Colonial Empire. Emerging as a union between warring Christian chiefdom Spain was the first nation to create a modern global empire. Discovering and seizing most of the precolumbian civilizations in the western hemisphere Spain was the premier global power of the 16th and 17th century. An excess of currency and stagnation led to a long decline in the 18th and 19th centuries. Spain though behind eventually recovered with industrialization and the development of North American frontier colonies in Mexico and Louisiana. Spain along with France and Portugal was responsible for the spread of Roman Catholicism, previously exclusive to Europe spreading across the world. Currently the largest industries within the mother country of Spain include tourism, marketing and manufacturing. Spain's colonial empire is part of the great eight within the Global Security Conference.
