The Isle of Wight and the adjacent Hampshire shore formed a Jutish kingdom in the Anglo-Saxon period. Along with Sussex, the Isle of Wight was one of the two pagan Anglo-Saxon kingdoms remaining in the late seventh century. Jutes from the dominant Kingdom of [[Kent (Penda Dies)|Kent]] occupied the island in the late seventh century and allowed the dynasty to rule with reduced rank.
