The Subalpine Federation (Federazione Subalpina, Foederatio Subalpinae and Fédération Subalpine) is a state in the northern part of the Italian peninsula, bordering Monaco to the west, the Alpine Confederation to the north and Genoa to the south. His territories are in the former region of Piedmont (Prov. of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandia), and the southern part of the ex-Province of Turin. Is also known as Piedmont, La Granda and as the Repùblica ëd Giondôja (The Republic of Gianduja / La république de Gianduja).

History

Pre-Doomsday

Before Doomsday the province of Cuneo was one of the largest provinces in Italy and it had an agricoltural and light industry economy, known for the Langhe and Nutella. It was created in 1859 by the Kingdom of Sardinia and in 1970 the province become part of the region of Piedmont.

Government

Selection of a form of government

The form of government was massively changed and it is totally different from that of pre war Italy, being much more similar to that of the Swiss Confederation and that of the Roman Republic of 1848 - 1849, the current form of government was chosen by the citizens in 1991, when after the period of isolation and military rule it was decided to restore the democratic institutions for the benefit of the hole nation, the referendum for the selection on how the nation was going to function was hold in the month of March of 1990 and there were 4 choices :

  1. A parliamentary and unitary republic, with the same structure as pre war Italy.
  2. A semi-presidential and unitary republic, with the same structure as the French Republic
  3. A parliamentary and constitutional monarchy with Amedeo di Savoia as their head of state, bringing back the Savoy to rule Piedmont.
  4. A federal and directorial republic, taking insipiration from the Swiss Confederation and from the Roman Republic of 1848 - 1849.

Seeing that both previous system fail in maintaining stable governments, a trust between democratic institutions and his citizens, the occasional scandals related to corruption or involvement of criminal activites the citizens choose the 4th option, with a 92% in favour. After the results were declared a constituent assembly was created for draft the constitution of the future country, his members worked for almost a full year on the drafting, the constituent take direct inspiration from the Swiss Constituion of 1874, the Italian Constituion of 1947 and it take as a direct model the Roman Constituion of 1849, for example from the Swiss constitution they take their federal system and the referendum systems, from the Italian one the many the many articles about the duties and rights of the citizens, as well the constitutional guarantees and the Provision XII, finally from the Roman constituion they take the form of government and the unique collective head of state, because the Roman Republic was established as a directorial republic where the figure of the triumvirate was both the head of state and the head of government, elected by the assembly for a duration of three years.

Political structure of the Federation

The Subalpine Federation is a democratic republic where the three branch of power (Legislative, Executive and Judicial) are separated and balanced between one another, since 1996 a federal system has been established where each state (Contado in Italian) has the right to self government and they can be compared to Swiss Cantons or American States, as they hold power across a various of institutions, from education to the supreme court of each state and to the administration of law enforcement in their state and the Federal Constitution of the Subalpine Federation (Costituzione federale della Federazione Subalpina - Constitution fédérale de la Fédération Subalpine) is the supreme law of the union and the one which every state has to respect and accept in order to become a member of the federation.

The incumbent legislation started the 18th March of 2017, the federal elections of the 18th resulted in a victory for the coalition "Uniti per la Subalpina - Unies pour la Subalpin", a coalition of centrist parties formed after the previous two elections of the right party "Lega Subalpina - Ligue Subalpine", the main right political parties formed in the 90s by ex-Democristians, both Italian and French, Gaullist, ex members of the seccesionist parties "Lega Lombarda" and "Lega Veneta" and moderated members of the MSI, it was founded by Mario Borghezio, Gaetano Majorino, Roberto Maroni, Umberto Bossi and other esponents and his current secretary is Riccardo Molinari, one of the youngest on the political scene of the Federation. Since the restoration of democratic institutions both the old Democrazia Cristiana and the Italian Communist Party fell shortly after came upon under heavy criticism for the DC not being able to protect Italy against the Soviets and for the PCI for being allied with a nation that destroyed Italy, other parties like the Italian Socialist Party or the Italian Social Movement were dissolved as well.

Political division

The 23 states are the principal administration division in the country, they were established in 1997, after the referendum for the choice of the form of government that the new nation was going to had and all of them were created in the spring of 1997, the borders where draw by local commissions elected by the citizens, and with the help and guidance of historians they set the bounds for each new state, called "Contado" in Italian, meaning "Country". Each contado is free and sovereign and they can govern themselves as they see fit, but as member of the federation they aren't allowed to conduct diplomatic relationships with other nations, raise or command an army outside of the National Guard of said state, print and issue currency.

Each state has two rapresentatives in the Senate, they are nominated by each state legislation and they remain in office for three years, as for local elections every state use a presidential system where the citizens of a state vote directly for the office of President, how many turns a president can serve or for how much years can remain in office is regulated by each state's constitution and each state can decide if have a bicameral or unicameral legislature, the name of the office the President of a state, command state troops of the national guard when are not under federal authority. Also in every state direct democracy is guaranteed and protected by both the federal and each state constitution; the Arengo is an assembly of citizen with 18 or more years, both of a commune or of a contado that is summon for important decisions or regurarely for debate about local issues or about state issues, the Arengo are used also for introducing state referendums that effect laws in one state. But Arengo are not the legislature of a state, as they can't create new laws, reject them or modify them, and they can't remove or impeach a president, or even asking for new elections.

Nutella

One of the most famous promotional image. with the phrase "What world it will be without Nutella ?"

The currency of the federation is the Cornabò Lira, created in the 90s after a decision to remove the Italian Lira of pre-Doomsday as the federal value and chainging it to the old Cornabò, printed in the 15th century by the Duchy of Savoy (C£).

One of the most famous products of the Subalpine Federation is the Nutella of the Ferrero S.P.A., the nutella is a gianduja cream with hazelnuts. It was invented in 1963 by Michele Ferrero, with Doomsday sales plundered and the company was near to declare bankruptcy, but thanks to the resurgence of international trades Ferrero has started to grow again. They also sell other products like Bueno, Tronky, Pocket Coffee, Kinder Cioccolato, Kinder Briosche and may others.

With the resume of the international relationships by the Federation, Ferrero has made an agreement with various Chilean farms and agricultural compaines for get fresh hazelnuts in order to avoid as much as possible to use national one, this because even if most of the hazelnuts produced in the federation are free to eat and without any trace of radiation the production can't able to keep up with the demand. From 2008 a new version of the Nutella called "Nutella Gentile" has been started to be produced, using the Hazelnuts of the Langhe, it has a more intense and rich flavour compared to a normal nutella, for now is only exported to Genoa, Venice, Tuscany, Alpine Confederation and the Celtic Alliance.

Economical history

The Federation from the 1980s - 1990s has increased his economy with the introduction of parts of factories scavenged around the Province of Turin and in Lombardy / Emilia-Romagna and with the introduction of a gradual free market system again after the collapse of the economy. Thanks to the relationship with the Alpine Confederation trade and exports did not fall, but they increased and not only towards Bern but also to Genoa too, since in 1988 most of their economy was destroyed when Sicily attacked them and various heavy factories like veichles, weapons, chemicals and others were created thanks to agreements with both Genoa and the Alpine Confederation.

In 2002, after various talks, an agreement was made with Genoa for allowing the Subalpines to use freely the port and the infrastractures of Genoa, in return for this concession the Subalpine Federation eliminate any tariff taxes towards trades coming and exiting from Genoa and Subalpine and also allowing the free passage of both goods and people between the two states, in this way the Subalpine Federation get access to the Mediterranean sea, allowing her to expand trade towards more European and American states.

With the resurgence of international trade also historical companies present in Italy would came back from South America to Italy, for create branches of their companies in the Peninsula for exporting their products and sell them to the Italian market; one of this was FIAT, now rebranded FIAT America open a new vehicle factory in Alessandria and offices in Cuneo for supervising the development of this new factory. Recently FIAT Subalpina created a new version of the FIAT Panda called "Electra", this version didn't use gasoline or oil for combustible, but energy instead, for now there are just a handful of prototypes and in 2020 the distribution to the public should start. Other famous branches that returned to Italy include Barilla, San Pellegrino, San Carlo, Rana, but also new companies that were never in Italy like SIG Sauer that find an easy and demanding market, thanks to the Sicilian treath and to the absence of any factory dedicated firearms in many new Italian states, they purchased the Beretta company in the 90s and renamed it SIG Sauer Italia, thanks to his intact factory it was possible for them expand their market.

The economy would continue to expand in the new millennium thanks to the increase of the general wealth of the population, a serious of economical reforms aimed at lowering taxes for private companies and with the liberalization of the economy and solding previous state hold companies in sectors like transportation, weaponry, telecomunications and others to private companies. With the opening on the international scene by the federation and the restoration of diplomatic relationship between the northern and southern hemisphere, mainly SAC and ANZC, with ambassadors came also tourism, private and public investments from the governments of UAR, Brazil, ANZC and Chile, even if the investments were considered low compared to that given to Genoa, Venice and Tuscany before and after the First and Secon Sicilian Wars, they nonetheless helping the with further modernizations and general improvements overall.

Also in 2007 the Airport of Cuneo and Levaldigi, now renamed Airport "Philip I of Acaja" was reopened and expanded to become the replacement for the destroyed Airport of the City of Turin for serving national and international flights, since his opening the airport has become one of the main airports of Italy and the 4ht largest buisiest, only behind Tuscany, Genoa, Venice and Trent and it started to operate international flights with Genoa, Venice, Tuscany, Alpine Confederation, Slovenia and Croatia since his opening, but in 2017 it increased his reach with the opening of 2 more terminals and the possibility of flights towards the Celtic Alliance, Portugal, Prussia, Nordic Union, Malta, Greece, Tunisia and Israel, there are talks of reopening intercontinental flights with scales in Tangier and towards Canada, Mexico, Brazil, UAR, India, ANZC and others.

Present status of the economy

By 2020 the economy of the Subalpine Federation still largely rely on their secondary and first sectors, mainly on the production of mass generated goods like electronics, vehicles, production of weapons, and fornitures, also of agricoltural products like wine, pasta, local cusine, cheeses and others, but there has been an increase towards the third sector with the provide of services and goods like banking, insurance, travel agents, consulence, restaurants, shops and others.

Overall the economy of the Subalpine Federation is one of the strongest, most intacted and well preserved among the other economies of the Peninsula, is also an innovative and modern market thanks to his pragmatism and low taxation. The main economic partners of the federation are GenoaVeniceAlpine FederationUnited American RepublicTuscanyAustralia and New Zealand among others.

Energy industry and green energy

The Subalpine Federation on energetic terms is a self sufficient nation, not only thanks to the unique geography of the Alps, that allows to have free energy thanks to the many hydroelectric, termoelectric and other sources of energy present in the territory, the federation is also very lucky, thanks to the presence of the largest hydroelectric power plant built in Italy before Doomsday; The Power Plant Luigi Einaudi of Entracque, in the Contado of the Occitan Valleys, it was open to the public just one year before Doomsday, thanks also to the quick response of the authorities of Cuneo the power plant remain intact and it was as soon as possible put operative back again, for give energy to the province in the moment, as 2020 the plant is still operative and gives to the federation a total of 1,317.67 MWh and 1,040 GWh yearly, enough for cover one half of the energy requests and necessities of the federation.

The other big fortune of the federation is the presence of the nuclear Power Plant Enrico Fermi, located in Trino, part of the Contado of the Montferrat since 1987, the power plant wasn't ransacked by the population, instead it continue to be used by the commune of Trino and the surrounding areas up until 1987, when a squad of soldiers of the 7th Infantry Regiment "Pietro Micca" during a recon mission discover the power plant, and to their suprise it was indeed intact and in function as the city of Trino was able to maintan order around the area and establish a safe zone from eventual raiders, but it was crowded with refugees and it was short on food and they already end the fuel that they have, the authorities offer to join the federation in return for safety, food and the departure of most of the all refugees in other parts of the confederation. The soldiers in the meantime comunicate the news back to Cuneo and the military put Trino and the plant under their protection and that of the federation, making Trino a vassal state until 1989, when they become part of Subalpine, the power plant has a total power of 23,8 TWh and is one of the oldest nuclear plant still operative.

Other sources of energy comprend the newly implemented solar and wind power plan, this new green energy is usually used in the western part of the federation, where the hilly and flat territory allow for the construction of it, but they are still expensive compared to the traditional sources of energy, they are mostly used by companies or farms for agricultural purposes. This new kind of energy nonetheless is attracting interest as it is free, cheap and ready to be used by everyone and even individual houses can use them, the use of green energy is supported by a moderate part of citizens and by the Unione dei Verdi - Union des Verts political party. Since Doomsday the Subalpine Federation, like any other northern nation without any oil deposit had to resort to use alternative carburants, in order to get any vehicle up and running again, the use of ethanol resurge again, forcing everyone to do as their grandparents did in the 1930s when Italy resorted to use ethanol with gasoline and other fuels in order to don't running out of oil. Since 2002 a factory of alternative engines was created in Novi Ligure, and subsequently a federal law was passed for the requirement that every new vehicles has to use this new ethanol based engine for being sellable in the federation until the situation will get up to pre-Doomsday.

Vehicles and transportations

As 2020 most of vehicles are owned by federal and state owned agencies like police corps, hospitals, the military, the federal government and others, meanwhile the civilian population since 1983 has continued to use their old cars, like FIAT 500, FIAT 127, Alfa Romeo Alfetta, Alfa Romeo Giulia, Lancia Beta, Lancia Gamma and so on, all of this vehicles have in common that they used a ethanol based engine for working, with a percentage of gasoline of the 5%, the rest being ethanol.

But in reality since most of the spare parts for this cars aren’t available or they are expensive to purchase at best they remain in garages to take dust, or being sell out to the government the Subalpines have resorted to other methods of transportations, bringing them back to the 1890s - 1900s in terms of transportation technology, like trams, railways, tramways, and buses in rare cases for the public transportation, for the private and individual many resorted to use either motorcycles like scooter, electric bikes, sidecars and as well bikes and three wheels cars based on the Ape Piaggio model, there is also a significant part of the population that has started again to use horses or carriages / coaches trained by horses, and this is a particular popular option in remote villages or in rural areas.

Nowadays most of the public transports are owned by either privates or state companies, the only federal owned public transports are the national railway (Rete Ferroviaria Subalpina) and the flag company of the federation (AirAlpi), the federation over the years has built an extensive network of railroads and tramways, this work was facilitated by the already present railroad system in Piedmont, being one of the most largest in Italy, but still new lines were created, like the line that from Saluzzo reach Susa and then Frejus or the tramway line from Alessandria to Casale Monferrato, the status of the railway is also always in good condition, thanks to the production of spare parts in local factories and by the efficiency of the various railroads and tickets are relatively cheap too, for example for going from Cuneo to Valenza you only need 12 Cornabò (roughly 10 ANZC$).

Ciclisti1

Bersaglieri of the 1st Battalion Bersaglieri Ciclisti during the 4th commemoration for the partecipation of the Federation in the Second Sicilian War.

Even if most of the land and air vehicles are used only by federal agencies many of them still use many non-gasoline vehicles like horses, bikes, and when they use it, they still use those that require very small amount of oil for being operative like motorbikes, electric bikes, scooters and so on, the military also have resorted to use oil based vehicles as thin as possible, since the 1990s the military use horse driven vehicles, motorcycles and bikes even in war, the cavalry charge of San Gimignano is one of this examples, when a squadron of cavalrymen of the Reggimento Cavalleggieri "Monferrato" manage to push back and besige a Sicilian force near the city, before the arrival of Tuscanian reinforcements. There are also other famous based units around this source of transportations like the Dragoons of the Savoia cavalry regiment, the Lanciers of the Tommaso d'Acaja regiment, the Light Cavalry of the Monferrato light cavalry regiment and of course the ever famous Bersaglieri ciclisti, they have an entire battalion for them and are considered one of the elite forces of the Subalpine Army.

Culture and society

Culture

The culture of the Subalpine Federation is a product of his history and of the people that live in it, the cultural and society aspects are very different from what they used to be pre-Doomsday, thanks to a large influx of French refugees in Italy. From 1983 to the 1990s the French population of the Rhone-Alps and Provence would seek refuge in Italy, believing that the Alps would protect them from the nuclear blasts of Lyon and Marseille, in thousands would come in Piedmont seeking refuge, using the tunnels that were constructed before the war as a safe and uncontrollabe escape route towards the more stable Italian countryside. In thousands would come in, but just not only ordinary people like families or civilian, but also military convoys, politicians, religious men and basically everyone who can move would seek shelter here.

Between 200,000 and 500,000 French citizens arrived in Italy during this period, in 1997 it was decided to give Subalpine citizenship to every French refugees and recognizing French as an official federal language alongside Italian, over the years the two cultures would emerge into one in some cases, creating a "Subalpine or Arles" culture, with both French and Italian elements, but the overall society would keep the two cultures separated, as this is common just among the younger generations, those that were born after doomsday and in a mixed society.

Over the years elements of the French culture would become commonplace in the federation, with things like Baguettes, Croissants, Pain au Chocolate, Escargot, and also regional aspects of the Dauphiné region like culinary or religious one, but also aspects of the Italian culture would become of commonuse for the French, like for example the usage of eating either Rice or Pasta during the week, smocking at a more younger age and also the creation of a teen slang using a mixure of French and Italian words.

Society

Statistically speaking there are at least 500,000s French speaking habitants, mainly located in the western states and the rest of the country is mainly populated by Italian speaking habitants, both French and Italian are studied and learned at school since elementary and they are necessary for now a vital part in the day to day life in the federation, at least 70% of the population speak both French and Italian regularly, while the rest either speak in French, Italian or in a state language at home.

Since the republic is a federation and based on the Swiss model every Contado is allowed to choose their own languages that will be equal to Italian and French, examples are; Ligurian in Oltregiogo, Lombard in Monferrant and others like Occitan in the Occitan Valleys, here's a list of the official languaes of ever Contado :

  1. Occitan Valleys : Italian, French and Occitan
  2. Vasto : Italian, French and Occitan

French and Italians aren't the only ethnic groups of the Federation, as there are as well large numbers of foreigners, the biggest of this group is the Alpines, mainly French and Italian Alpines who decided to came to live in Subalpine since most of them are either ex-Italian citizens or because they prefer southern Piedmont over the French nations, there is also a discrete number of Ligurians, mainly around Alessandria and Novi Ligure or Cuneo, they came here mainly for set up new buisness or start enterpirses.

The demographics of the region has also changed massively thanks to Doomsday and his following events, from a region of 1,265,936 inhabitants to the near 2 millions of today, this due to the large influx of Italian and French refugees and also for the good fertility rate of the population, following a few shortages and famines in 1983 - 1985 and the radiation poisions due to the nuclear annihilation of Turin and the consequently radioactive winds that pass into part of the ex-province, but other then that the Subalpines are one of the safest populations of Italy, thanks to their intact territory and also to the Alps that prevent much of the radioactive winds to caming into Italy, the Subalpines have also a pretty long life expectency, in general is 80 - 87 for men and 78 - 91 for women and every citzens is provided with an insurane, social assistance and free healthcare other then free education up until university.

The cities of the region changed too, thanks to the investments done by national and international companies or governments and for the influx of peoples into the federation, for example Cuneo, a city of 55,875 in 1981 has growth substentially over the decades, arriving now at having 250.655 inhabitants, since becoming the federal capital of the Federation it was nicknamed "La Piccola Torino" (Little Turin), due to the similarity with Turin in demographics and for the stady but constant expansion of the city, with the creations of new neighborhoods and economical zones.

Here's the list of the largest city of the Federation :

  1. Cuneo (250,655)

Religion

Religion has always been part of the everyday life of many Subalpines since Doomsday, but has massively changed since 1983 and in bit part thanks to the armageddon itself, because both the number of active chirstians and atheist changed from pre-doomsday to post-doomsday.

Catholicism is still the largest religion followed by the overall population, with 70% attending mass every sunday, both in the French and Italian areas, there is also a substantial protestant minority, made up by Italian Waldesians, French Protestants, called Huguenots and they thogether they made up 4% of the population. In contrast 22% of the total population declared to be atheist or irreligious, this thanks not only to the lost in faith of many Christians but also for the further secularization of the society, inspired by the ideals of the Swiss Confederation and the secularism of Carlo Cattaneo and Giuseppe Mazzini, the federal government started a campaign of separating even further the state from the curch, starting by the removing of religious object from public buildings such as state and federal offices, schools, by replacing the obbligatory hour of religion with the subject of civic education and the repudial of the Lateranensi Pact of 1929.

The rest of the religious spectrum is divided between various other religions like Orthodox, Judaism and Jehovah's Witnesses.

Since the 90s a new deal was signed between the federation and the Vatican City for the abolishment of Catholicism as the religion of state, as stated before Doomsday.

Media and communications

Televisions

The masscommunications and media were all shot down until the late 90s - early 2000s, when with the help of the Alpine Confederation production of televisions resumed thanks to the military expeditions send around the ruins of Turin for scaveging any possible intact factory and bring back the components and tools in southern Piedmont, one of this to be scavaged was Piemonte Elettronica, a company that before Doomsday produced electronics like televisions and radio, thanks to the recovery of this industrial tools the federation now had the ability of producing televisions and many workshops or electronic shops are now starting to be open for fixing and repairing any pre DD or post DD television.

During the same period the federal government decided to create a federal sponsored state televison, much like the old RAI, but also allowing private companies to resume the use of private channels that were starting to become popular, nowdays there are at least several regional focused telecommunication companies like TeleAcaja, based in Fossano or TeleGold in Alessandria, with the target being focused on local customs and on a state level.

In 2001 the federal government created RadioTele Subalpina - RadioTélé subalpines, a public owned broadcasting company created mainly for give at the people more options of what to see and also to provide a free and arbitrary source of news, programs and also films, talk shows and documentaries among others, in 2006 RTS started to expand from the original three channels since his creation, RTS Sport was the first new channel created with new purposes, transmetting 24/24 sport programs and news about sports, by 2020 3 are the channels created by the RTS with a single program and with bi-lingual programs, and this is the full list of channels owned by the RTS :

  1. RadioTele 1 - channel created for the Italian speaking population of the federation, is aimed toward a generalist public as is one of the most watched channels.
  2. RadioTélé 2 - channel created for the French speaking population of the federation, is also this aimed toward a generalistic public, but with a French taste and approach, also it use French as his broadcasting language.
  3. RadioTele 3 - channel with contents both in French and in Italian, oriented towards a younger auidence at day and at night for an adult one with films, documentaries, talkshows and more.
  4. RadioTele Sport - channel created with the focus of providing sport news and reports to those who are appassionate of sports in general.
  5. RadioTele News - channel dedicated soly to the reportage of news and current events of the world.
  6. RadioTele Cartoons - channel aimed at a younger audience, mainly childrens and teenagers, with both old and new French and Italian or new Subalpine cartoons, one of the most popular shows of the channels is Carosello, a 30 minute that is broadcasted every afternoon at dinner time.

The RTS has his headquarters in Cuneo, in the old studios of the RAI and of Telecupole, it has also minor studios in Asti, Valenza and in Susa, that cover local areas and give to the federation a total coverage of television signals, the RTS has also studios in Bern, Firenze, Venice, Malta, Monaco, Clemont-Ferrand, Orléans, Dijon, Dublin, Berlin and Lille. There are plans to create studios in Vermont or in Australia for further expand the services provided by the RTS. And the signal is powerful enough to be able to be seen also outside of the Federation, mainly in the south-west part of the Alpine Confederation, Genoa, Monaco, northern Tuscany and Corsica.

Radio

The use of the radio didn't decrease, but instead rise again with Doomsday as Television is quite popular and available for everyone, but radio are still used for listening to music, listen their favourite DJs or just for chill in front of the radio, like in the television market there are a good amount of private owned radio stations, either federal or regional, like Radio Monferrat, dedicated to old and new songs, RadioRock, to the broadcasting of rock music, Radio Parì, for the French speaking population with popular french music and Radio Maria, a religious radio set up by the Chiesa for spreading the message of the Church.

Most of the records used by radios are either produced before doomsday and founded in abandoned areas or preserved in stockpiles by functioning radios, since the 2000s most of the records are created, recorded and sell to the public via discographic companies, or leased, copied and then given back to the original proprietry.

Printed media

Newspapers and magazines were the first and only possible way of getting any kind of distraction from the apocalypse or even for reading the news, nowdays is mostly popular among the adult population and the elderly, who have the habit of reading the newspaper at moring in their favorite cafè while drinking Vin Brulè or coffee, as 2020 there isn't a state owned newspaper company because this sector is entirely made by private.

The most famous and widespread newspapers are La Stampa, a reminiscent of the old La Stampa, the most popular newspaiper in the country, Le Dauphiné, the most popular among the French community and based in Cuneo, Piemont, favourite among the Piedmontese population as is written in Piedmontese only, popular in every part of the federation, Micca, the political newspaiper of the centre-right party "Stella Alpina", named after Pietro Micca, the Savoyard soldier who give up his life in order to lift the Siege of Turin in 1703, Il Domani, the political newspaiper of the leftiest "Partito dei Lavoratori Subalpini - Parti des Travailleurs Subalpin" and also many others.

Military and federal defense

History of the Army

The Piedmontese Army (Italian: Esercito Piemontese, French: Armée Piémontais) are the military forces of the Piedmontese Federation, they were originally formed in the late 1980s / early 1990s as the Defence Militia (Italian: Milizia di Difesa, French: Milice de Défense) for giving a structure and a cohesive organization that would unite the units of the Italian Army and French Army into a single group, overtime the militia would grow in size and be a formidable force in north-west Italy. In 1996 the militia will be renamed into the Subalpine Army (Italian: Esercito Subalpino, French: Armée Subalpine) and give it a more military and professional structure, with a single chain of command, standardized equipment, new vehicles and ordinances and such.

Between 2000 and 2007 the army would go under a series of reforms and modernization under the partnership of the Alpine Confederation, Vaduz send military attachè and trainers to the Federation, as well equipment of various sorts, thanks to the reforms and the influence that the Swiss instructors give to the Army it now resembles more the Swiss Army, rather than the old Italian or French armed forces, by 2009 the army had a strength of 100,000, divided between ground forces and the air force.

After the Second Italian War, the army would gradually decrease it’s numbers via a series of referendums in 2013 and in 2017, by 2020 the number of military in service is 70,304, divided between volunteers and conscripts.

Conscription and reserve forces

Conscription is mandatory for able-fit men from the age of 18 up to the age of 40, meanwhile for women is voluntary. The draft is 9 months long for every member of the army, after the expiration of said service they are eligible for joining the Piedmontese National Guard (Italian: Guardia Nazionale Piemontese, French: Garde Nationale Piémontais), a reserve and militia force composed by units of each state and under the command of both one of the 23 states and the federal government.

The National Guard took inspiration from the French Garde Nationale and the Italian Guardia Nazionale that both existed during the 19th century, but the greatest inspiration is taken from the National Guard of the United States.

Service branches

The Army is currently divided into three service branches; Ground Forces, Air Force and the Carabinieri, every branch use Italian and French as their working and service languages, there are also courses in English for peacekeeping personnel involved in LoN operations. His total strength is of 25,304 servicemen, but during wartime, the army could even reach over 100,000 servicemen in active duty, thanks to the reserve forces.

  • Ground Forces (Italian: Forze di Terra, French: Force de Terre): 14,512
  • Air Force (Italian: Aeronautica militare, French: Aéronautique militaire): 1,876
  • Carabinieri (Italian: Corpo dei Carabinieri, French: Corps des Carabiniers): 8,916

Equipment and ordinances

Since the formation of the militia, their equipment was mixed and very badly organized, composed of modern assault rifles like the SIG 540 and the FAMAS F1, but also older designs like the Beretta BM 59, still the standard service rifle of the Italian Army in 1983, or even older weapons like the MAB-38 SMG, the Garand M1 in 7.62 NATO and others.

Over the years the army manages to equip all its active members with the SIG 540 assault rifle, renominated AR 77/97 by the Subalpine Army, after his adoption in 1997 as the standard assault rifle in 5.56 NATO, with the adoption of the AR 77/97 other weapons non in the standard calibre of the army were decommissioned and given to the National Guard or sell to the civilian market or even scrapped, the BM 59 serve as the main service rifle for the National Guard and the law enforcement of the federation uses it in a non-lethal confederation as a grenade launcher during crowd control or riots, alongside the M1 Carbine.

By 2020 the Piedmontese Army is still equipped with the AR 77/97, but all of them have been refitted with the possibility of equipping an M203 under-barrel grenade launcher and the possibility of mounting a vertical grip on the barrel and an Aimpoint CompM2, a Swedish made red dot sight, but these are usually reserved for the special forces.

The army also has in service various SMGs, LMGs, sniper rifles, battle rifles and more, including pistols and grenade devices.

Foreign relations

The Subalpine Federation as has a wide network of embassies trough the world and has friendly relationships with most of the European countries, the exception being the Sicilian Republic, since the attack on Genoa in 1988 the federation refuse to recognize Sicily as an indipendent nation, and instread consider the territory of the republic being under occupation by the Mafia, but despite this it still enjoy good relationships with many European, American and Asian states; by far the country that has the most ties with Subalpine is the Alpine Confederation, as the two enjoy not only a mutual form of government and overall political structure, but also strong cultural, trade and historical ties with Switzerland, the Subalpine Federation is the only country in the Peninsula, outside of Sicily and San Marino that didn't have any foreign base in their territory, still the Alpine Confederation is the biggest trade parter with the Federation and one of the main importers of Alpine goods, reanging from utilities object to military gear produced by Swiss industries.

Other then with the Confederation, Cuneo has strong relationships with the Republic of Genoa, the Serenissima Republic, Tuscany and San Marino, as ex parts of the Italian Republic there is a special bond between this states, not only because they are also all founders and members of the Italian Peninsular Alliance, but also because of a common history, language, religion and the constant trade connections and formal relations between their members, there are possible talks of expanding this bond even more with the creation of a single currency, free movement of good and people between the Italian borders, the creation of a combined military force and even the possible creation of a confederation, as it was proposed during the Risorgimento.

As for the American continent the union have extreme good relationships with America, Brazil, Chile and all the others nations of South America, not only because of the Italian diaspora in the previous century but also for the evermore growing relations and ties with the Italian states, the South American countries rapresent a big chunk of investments that are poured into the peninsula, both by governments and also by private citizens, this not only because of the cultural ties between this countries, but also for the initiative of the Latin governmetns, in particular UAR and Brazil to create create more support among the Italian for the SAC over the ANZC and with the hope of create in the future a Italy allied with the SAC. Still the Federation has also good relationships with Mexico, and since 2008 Cuneo has open relationships with Canada, the first country in Northern America to have relationship with the Federation, followed by Vermont in 2013, Texas in 2017, Victoria in 2018, the United States in 2019 and Superior this year in 2020, among the other largest North Americans states that don't have any kind of relationships with the Federation are Kentucky, for their isolationism from European politics and the impossibility to reach them and Virginia, for the high militaristic and totalitarian government, also for the official support that Virginia give to Croatia and Slovenia in the Istrian dispute.

By far the country with the most excellent relations outside of America and Europe is the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand, even before Doomsday Italy enjoy good relationships with Australia as common allied, and for hosting near one million of Italian discendents, called Italo-Australians, even after 1983 the relations between the two are countries have strong and affable relationship, from 2010 the Commonwealth has give helped in a lot of government funded project and infrastractures, like the amplification of the ports of Genoa, Trieste, Viareggio, the reparation and restoration to full power to the nuclear power plant of Trino, the restoration of most of the thelephone line in Italy alongside the investments made in Tuscany after the war. In Asia meanwhile Subalpine has relations only with India, Pakistan, Taiwan, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon and most recently in 2019 with the Japanese Empire.

As it come to organizations the Subalpine Federation is a member and a founder to many of them, the first of this was the League of Nations, the federation was among the many states that founded the league and President Enzo Ghigo was at the cerimony of inauguration of the League of Nations in Nukuʻalofa, the Subalpine has been an active member of the league ever since, from peacekeeping mission like that one in Haiti after the earthquake of 2010 to WCRB missions in Turin since 2014, in 2009 the Federation become the 13th member to join the Atlantic Defense Community, the first Italian state to do so and in 2010 alongside Genoa, Venice, San Marino and Tuscany the Italian Peninsular Alliance was formed as a military alliance against Sicily, after the war it has become also a economical alliance.
