A Superpower is a sovereign state which dominates its local geopolitical region within its global sphere of influence. The first empire to wield power on this scale was Achaemenid Persia in the 6th century BCE. In its heyday, Persia owned land on all three Eurasian continents, being strategically positioned on the silk road as a mediator for Sino-Roman commerce. Years later, Rome itself became the primary Old World superpower. The Mongols followed shortly with their dominance of the entire Eastern World. In Our reality, no superpower was dominant for more than a few centuries, as each one eventually collapsed under its own weight. This alternate history explores a possible world where three minor divergences allow some empires to persist, leaving a planet ruled by '''[[Superpowers]]'''.

This timeline diverges from our reality at three separate points in history; each event occurs at its own point in time and in a unique part of the world. The PODs follow as:

#'''173 AD:''' During his tour of the Greek Provinces, Marcus Aurelius meets a promising young boy named '''Gaius Correlus Sulla'''. Endeared by the child's intelligence, Aurelius adopts young Gaius and declares him the successor to the imperial throne over Commodus, the emperor's biological son. Sulla becomes Caesar in 180 CE and with a clearer mind than Commodus, prevents the Empire's tumble into centuries of unrest that would have ended in its collapse.

#'''394 AD:''' '''Quich'en Ch'onle Mayapan''' is born in a family from the mighty Maya city-state of Calakmul. Mayapan grows into one of the greatest minds in history, and unites the Maya city-states by 452, thereby creating the greatest empire ever seen in the New World.

#'''1185 AD:''' Genghis Khan successfully protects his wife Borte from Merkit raiders and the legitimacy of her son '''Jochi''' is never in question. The father and son grow closer than they otherwise would and Jochi is named the sole successor of the Mongolian Yuan Dynasty when Genghis Khan dies.

This timeline diverges from our reality at two isolated points in history; each event occurs at its own time and place without any influence from the other event. These '''Points of Divergence''' (PODs) are the births of the following individuals:
The speculative intent of the timeline is to imagine what changes can be made by a single person. Two divergences in this scenario put a genius at the helms of a country during a period of great potential, and a third gives a growing nation a leader who suffices to maintain its political cohesion. If there is a plausible thesis underlying the events of this timeline it is that good leadership can completely alter the outcome of a period in history. The right person at the right time can make the difference between plunging a country into ruin and leading her into prosperity.

#'''165 AD:''' '''Gaius Corellus Sulla''' is born and eventually orphaned in the city of Athens. During a tour of his Greek provinces, Emperor Marcus Aurelius discovers this orphan boy and, drawn by his intelligence, adopts the young Gaius and eventually names the boy his successor alongside his natural son Commodus. Sulla becomes Caesar in 180 CE and, with a clearer mind than Commodus, stops Rome from tumbling into centuries of unrest that would have ended in its collapse.

#'''394 AD:''' '''Kich'en C'onle''' is born to a family living in the great city of Yax Mutal. A superpower is a sovereign state which exerts the greatest influence within its local geopolitical region. At its peak, the Persian Empire covered land on all three Eurasian continents, strategically positioned at the crossroads for Sino-European commerce. Centuries later, Rome emerged as the dominant Old World superpower in the west while Han China exerted its influence in the east. A millennium after them, the Mongols became the superpower of Asia. Points of Divergence

World of Superpowers in the 7th century

This timeline diverges from our reality at two isolated points in history; each event occurs at its own time and place without any influence from the other event. These Points of Divergence (PODs) are the births of the following individuals:

  1. 165 AD: Gaius Corellus Sulla is born and eventually orphaned in the city of Athens.
  2. 394 AD: Kich'en C'onle is born to a family living in the great city of Yax Mutal. The boy grows up to become one of the greatest minds in history, using his curiosity and memory to learn about the natural world and to unite the city-states of the nearby kingdoms by 452 CE, forging a single kingdom in control of the entirety of Mesoamerica.

The speculative purpose of this timeline is to consider what changes can be made by a single person. The divergences in this scenario put a genius at the helms of nations during periods of great potential. If there is a plausible thesis underlying the events of this timeline, it is that good leadership can completely alter the course of history. The right person at the right time can make the difference between plunging a civilization into ruin and leading it into prosperity.
