The Republic of Swabia (German: Republik Schwaben), colloquially known as Swabia (Schwaben), is a sovereign state located in Central Europe. The nation is bordered by Hesse in the north; Bavaria in the east; Switzerland in the south; and France in the west. Stuttgart is both the capital and largest city.
Swabia gained independence in the early-1950s as a consequence of the partition of Germany following World War II. The south was originally under French occupation while the north was under American occupation. In 1951, both zones voted in favor of unification into a single nation. The newly proclaimed Republic of Swabia moved closer to France during the 1950s and became a member of NATO during this time.
The Swabian economy is one of the largest in Europe. Major companies are headquartered there — including Bosch (technology), Daimler-Benz (automobiles), and Lidl (retailer).
