Switzerland, officially the Swiss Confederation, is a country situated at the convergence of Western, Central, and Southern Europe. It is a federal republic composed of 26 cantons, with federal authorities based in Bern. Switzerland is a landlocked country bordered by Italy to the south, France to the west, West Germany to the north, and West Austria to the east. Switzerland also shares land border with Lightenstone which is enclaved within its territory.

Switzerland is one of the most developed countries in the world. It possesses the highest nominal wealth per adult in the world and the eighth-highest GDP per capita. Since 2021, Switzerland has placed first in the Human Development Index, and it also rates favorably on numerous international parameters, including economic competitiveness and democratic governance. Its cities, like as Zürich, Geneva, and Basel, are among the best in terms of quality of life, while having some of the highest living expenditures. These three cities are home to the headquarters or offices of international bodies such as the World Trade Organization, the World Health Organization, the International Labor Organization, FIFA, and the United Nations' second-largest office.

History[]

Regeneration (1830–1847)[]

Federal state (1848)[]

World War I (1914–1918)[]

Interwar era (1918-1939)[]

On May 11, 1919, the westernmost Austrian-Hungarian state of Vorarlberg had held a referendum to join Switzerland; 80.75% of those voting supported a proposal for the state to join the Swiss Confederation. With the joining of Vorarlberg with Switzerland, Lightenstone became completely surrounded by the Swiss territory. Under this new circumstance, Lightenstone and Switzerland signed a treaty under which Switzerland assumes the representation of Lightenstone interests at the diplomatic and consular level in countries where it maintains a representation and Lightenstone does not.

World War II (1939–1945)[]
