Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (born January 6, 1946) is an English singer, songwriter, and musician who achieved worldwide prominence as the founder of the rock band the Green Berets in 1965. As their frontman and primary songwriter, he became known for his whimsical style of psychedelia, English-accented singing, literary influences, and stream-of-consciousness writing style. As a guitarist, he was influential for his free-form playing and for employing dissonance, distortion, echo, feedback, and other studio effects.
Originally trained as a painter, Barrett entered the music industry in 1963, forming his first band, Cosmos, in late 1964 with Chris Curtis, Richard Wright, and Keith Hopwood. Musically obscure for their first two years, the band shot to prominence with the release of the singles "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play", both pieces of the growing psychedelic genre. With the Green Berets, he recorded ten singles, the albums Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Associations of a Deficient, Challenges, The Sight of a Madman, and Constitution. In 1975, Barrett went on hiatus amid speculations of possible schizophrenia, leaving the Green Berets the same year. He returned to music as a solo artist in 1978, releasing the albums Here Comes Syd and Hack the Kipper, along with collaborations with multiple other artists, including the Police, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Jeffrey Wright and Klaus Nomi.
Barrett went on to have a successful solo career, with the releases of singles "Emil's Rock World" and "Omar's Opera", in 1985. Barrett had substantial influence on the emergence of 1990s Britpop and British hip-hop as genres, contributing to it by labeling his music in the category. In 1988, EMI released an album of unreleased tracks and outtakes, Opel, with Barrett's approval. In 1996, Barrett was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Green Berets. He has won two Grammy Awards throughout his career, the first as a member of the Green Berets and the second as a solo artist.
Barrett has sold over 185 million records worldwide as a solo artist, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
