Syria has a Treaty of Independence with France since September 1936, but it's not yet officially.

In 1938, the Republic of Hatay was separated from it and became part of Turkey in 1939.

President is Bahij al-Khatib. The country has close to 3 Million inhabitants in 1940. Many of those belong to Minorities: Kurds, Turkmenes, Assyrians, Aramaeans, Circassians, Armenians, not to mention religious Minorities like Christians, Shiites, Druze, Alawites, and Jews.

The French Army of the Levant (about 40,000 men strong) is stationed here and in Lebanon.
