With the rise of ISIL and anti-government demonstrators, in 2015 Syria was plunged into civil war. In December of that same year, Syria, amongst other nations, was invited to the Erbil Conference to discuss the Independence of Kurdistan, a move thought to be a Russian attempt to undermine Turkey after the shootdown of a Russian Jet. On the 21st of December Kurdistan ceded from Syria, Iraq and Iran.
The next year saw great gains against ISIL, including the capture of Palmyra in March 2016. Indeed, later that month discussions began for the installation of a UN Peacekeeping Mission in Kurdistan, as well as Iraq and Syria.
