Nmal, you've missed that the revolt was encouraged, and even to some degree led, by American soldiers, and a lot of the leadership of the revolt was American. Heck, they wanted annexation.
Moreover, the USA not annexing the area runs entirely counter to manifest destiny.
This just doesn't make much sense.
