The Independent[]

Looks like we got a little mention in the Independent a couple of months back.

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/features/could-sites-like-wikia-be-the-future-of-fandom-8340819.html

Although, I must take it upon myself to note that they describe 83DD as a nuclear war engulfing the UK. Only the British would center a global doomsday upon themselves, lol. :D

Oh my Fucking God!! Hahaha, well they are the independent, and they are British. We do have a fondness for saying the world revolves around us...

Who might Rhodi Marsden might be? He definately knows his stuff, so he much have checked out this wiki beforehand. Although it won't be that tough to find stuff about 1983: Dommsday, it is our flagship timeline :D 1 Imp (Say Hi?!) 22:45, February 19, 2013 (UTC)

Where did you find this anyway? 1 Imp (Say Hi?!) 22:50, February 19, 2013 (UTC)

They have a subpage titled "Wikis in the News" and I found us listed there.

Cool, huh? Anyways, fact of the matter is that he got an interview with someone at Wikia and they dropped our name.

Have to say, this just tickles me pink! =)

Always nice to see that we're known at there at least to some degree. Curious that wikia told them about it, though.

Community Messages[]

This is just a little bit of grammar fixing that hardly needs to be touched on at all, but it's bugging me a bit; on the Recent Wiki Activity page, the bullet point about the map contest has an it's missing an apotrophe.  Also, I feel like the last five short sentences can be combined into two or three longer ones that express the same point with unnecessary pauses, but again it's not a big deal.  Cheers.

A somber reminder. Today in history.[]

I was not sure where to put this, so here it is:

October 1962. The Cuban Missile Conflict .

This contains an alternate history, complete with interviews of survivors.

A question[]

Who made that logo? Are they still on the wiki, and if so could they help me in making a logo for a certain other wiki I'm an Admin of?~~Myotragus 21:38, July 10, 2014 (UTC)

Villa Cruoninga is the creator, and as the the rest, no. Lordganon (talk) 13:36, July 16, 2014 (UTC)

Making the categories timeline into another category[]

What about dividing the timelines into separate categories, for example all of the WW1 timelines move into WW1 timeline category and vise versa to clean the timeline category up Matt121 ??? Matt125 (Talk) 04:41, October 28, 2014 (UTC)

It used to be like this, but after a while this system was removed, and the administrators spend a long time removing these categories. The problem is that there aren't really "WWI timelines". Timelines can start at a spot, sure, but timelines progress into many different areas and time periods. For that reason the subcategories were removed, and from then on all timelines just used the timelines category. Mscoree (talk) 11:46, October 28, 2014 (UTC)

^ Exactly. Plus, there are many good TLs with multiple PODs at different times. What do we categorize them as?

Centriflag   Tonight the foxes will hunt the hounds!  21:45, October 29, 2014 (UTC)

Maybe make it from the first POD. So we can have categories Timelines: 1000-1100 for example as a category but it that is another suggestion Matt121 ??? Matt125 (Talk) 03:38, October 30, 2014 (UTC)

Still does not work, for the same reason. Many timelines have more than one PoD, that happen at the same time. There is just no point to this. Lordganon (talk) 11:50, November 1, 2014 (UTC)

10 Years?[]

After browsing through wikia community central, apparently this says we are, but the top says January 25th 2015. Which one is the correct date? Saturn (Talk/Blog) 23:44, November 20, 2014 (UTC)

Interesting. And Confusing. Because on Nik42's profile it says 26th January, same as the main page. So I think perhaps it might be 26th January. 1 Imp (Say Hi?!) 23:51, November 20, 2014 (UTC)

That's not an exact date. I think he meant it as in "have recently or will soon turn ten years"

Centriflag   Tonight the foxes will hunt the hounds!  00:07, November 21, 2014 (UTC)

Have to go with Nik. Seen a few different dates overall, but can definitely say it was not in December. Lordganon (talk) 12:56, November 23, 2014 (UTC)

Creativity Dead--Advice?[]

So this is probably not at all the proper place for this, and I'm pretty sure I've alienated myself here, but I'm going to do put this here anyway because I don't know where to get advice on this for.

I'm sure it hasn't escaped anyone's notice that I've been sitting on the sidelines for a while now, contributing here and there every few months (or years). Which pretty much applies to every area of my life, especially my creative pursuits. It's not that I don't want to involve myself with anything, I do, it's just I don't feel like anything I have to offer will be meaningful. This is because I'm fundamentally an unoriginal, uncreative person.

Take my timelines, or other contributions, on this site for example. While I could have developed a fully fleshed timeline in the time I've been on the Wiki, I've instead got wrapped up on building this unrealistic world, dismissing any possible timeline ideas because they don't fit the ideas in my head, or imply a great deal of creative thinking that's beyond my abilities. Literally, I have caches of alternate history-related images which help me envision this TL as well as provide inspiration for my map-making, flag-making, etc. which I routinely delete and reaccumulate. Whenever I go to actually make contributions, I get discouraged and disinterested. My DD article is a prime example of this.

While I've been doing a lot more art lately, most of it is not spontaneous, but planned or done with tons of reference material and practice. And nothing compared to people I know, who I'm especially envious of when it comes to their awesome spontaneously-done art. My art literally looks little different than what I made when I was ten. Which is why the only things I've uploaded to DeviantArt are some of the AltHist flags and maps I made which I like. Because when I try to upload my art, it looks like absolute schnitzel.

And than there's the writing. While I'm fine with wiritng things based solely in reality, when it comes to my sci fi writings I'm frustrated because they're so incredibly cliched it's not even funny. Like, seriously overdone stuff. And I can't think of anything original. Or if I do, someone beats me to it. Not bragging or anything, but the JP fanfic I was going to write which everyone was excited about? Yeah, plot's basically Jurassic World, but back in the USSR!

Not just that, but the current project I've been developing since I was thirteen or fifteen, I dunno, I was originally going to call Terra Nova, before Spielberg's Terranova made headlines as a big flop. Same thing when I decided to call it Interstellar. Ascension? Done. Oblivion? Done. Like, WTF? At least Icarus Falls hasn't been used yet, though admittedly I decided to call it that after some Alternate History on the site. Not this one, the other one.

Since I'm not going anywhere with anything, and am not entirely creative enough, should I just clean house? Deactivate my accounts for DA, JPLegacy, AltHist sites since they're going no where? Focus on my studies which will give me tangible satisfaction and an outlet?

Any advice would be appreciated. Sorry for imposing, I know this was not the right place to do to this, but where would it be?

Canuck2012 (talk) 03:01, September 30, 2015 (UTC)Canuck2012

I'd think the main talk page of a creative althistory wiki would be a great place to vent about writer's block, actually. Heck, it happens to all of us, I'm still recovering from mine that had me out of the picture here for quite a few years...lol.

Maybe try writing a really absurd piece of fiction, not necessarily implausible, but something a bit out of the ordinary. Literally just write the first thing that comes to mind, doesn't even necessarily have to be "good". And then once you have it on paper (or text, I guess) then critique, critique, critique

I'd be willing to help you out with your Doomsday article, if you'd like. I'm currently living in China so hopefully I can be of some assistance. Arstar talk 16:50, October 1, 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, it means a lot to know someone else understands what I'm going through. I guess what you're telling me is I shouldn't be so hard on myself. and just keep trying?

Canuck2012 (talk) 18:22, October 3, 2015 (UTC)Canuck2012

In a sense; an overdose of self-criticism can lead to you just shooting your ideas down before they leave your head. Maybe put together an Ideas page where you can just put your ideas to paper and see if you can build on them from there? Arstar (talk) 08:34, October 6, 2015 (UTC)

Could Use some Help[]

Open or Collaborative Timeline[]

At present we have two categories Timelines and Open. timelines. Also Communities. We have an page Alternative History:Communities. Would it be better to merge then in a common category and explain and have policy for collaborative along a template? --JorgeGG (talk) 17:01, July 6, 2016 (UTC)

"Communities" is a different concept entirely.

Open is where anyone can edit it provided they follow the rules. DD is like this.

"Collaborative" is where more than one person is involved, but it is not open to anyone.
