Its pretty clear in the TL that Delaware is independent. Mitro 14:49, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
"New" Maryland[]
I like the idea of Maryland at some point controlling OTL Liberia: see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Maryland. I forsee the Maryland government throwing their support behind the "Maryland Colonization Society" in creating a homeland for the freed slaves of Maryland since I doubt the people of Maryland would like the idea of having to treat the freed slaves as equals. The nation might even take some refugees from the slave revolts in Carolina. Maryland would probably hold onto the state for a while but eventually decolonization would set in and they would gain their independence.
Whether they control the Ivory Coast as well is unlikely IMO. Mitro 15:04, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
Since the history of this Maryland is in rhe planning statge, I have decided that eventually, when the political climate is more favourable to do so, that the Liberians would be officially brought into the fold. Citizenship and full representation in the legislature. Oh and the right to vote in all elections. However, this will take time. --Yankovic270 15:18, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
- I don't see that as likely. I can't think of any precedent for that in our own history. Maryland is going to treat New Maryland like any other African colony is treated by Europeans. The fact that they are "American" won't change anything. Look at the how Hawaii became an American territory or what happened to the Philppines after the Spanish-American War. In all likelihood Maryland will squeeze the colony for every dollar its worth causing the populace to demand independence and adopt a few radical ideologies in support of the movement. There will probably be some fighting but the war is going to prove unpopular in the long run. New Maryland (I don't think they will be called Liberia in this TL) will get its independence and later sign a few free trade agreements with Maryland. They will be united by their shared history and a few trade treaties, but not politically. Mitro 15:51, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
