Revision as of 06:44, 24 October 2018

I JUST saw this while looking through the DD talk page. If the anon author is still around, are you still working on this article? I postulated that [1] Elizabeth City (northwest of Manteo) was a survivor community that had been discovered by Brazil years ago, and recently rediscovered by the LoN. I'd like to discuss your good ideas, so we are not conflicting with one another.--BrianD 16:00, January 9, 2010 (UTC)

fuel

Biofuel and solar cars would be inpratical in a post DD nation. --HAD 10:46, January 13, 2010 (UTC)

Economy

Assuming that the islands did not contact the mainland for nearly 20 years, there are a few things about "self-sufficiency" that do not work with such a small state with very limited resources.

First, there would be no restriction on the fishing, because they would not be able to "overfish" the waters of the Atlantic Ocean! If they are isolationists, then it would not matter until they began fighting with Delmarva over the rights of borderline fishing zones.

Biodiesel is a possibitlity, but I suspect only for boats. Transportation on the islands would probably be by utilizing their feral horses that inhabit the islands. In OTL tour guides and other locals have been using them for years. They would not have "newer models" designed to run on ethanol, assuming grain was used for such a thing.

Once the mainland protectorate is established, I do see the possibility of a hydroelectric plant on the Roanoke, but the nuclear power plant is definitely beyond the tiny state's abilities. Even the hydro plant will probably require a lot of help from the likes of Delmarva, VR, and others. If an international concern built a nuclear power plant, it would probably not be constructed on a barrier island anyway. SouthWriter 20:30, August 25, 2010 (UTC)

Open for Adoption

I've done a little work on it, but I know Fx and Brian are interested in this as well, so I fixed the problems HAD and I had with the "Economy" section (leaving what was there "hidden" in code for those who are interested). The previous edit had assumed far too much technology for the small nation-state. SouthWriter 01:39, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

I removed the adoption template, that one is for entire TLs. I think we should create one for our articles. Mitro 01:46, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

I agree with the changes you made. Some of the material was a bit wierd such as solar cars and a nuclear power plant. I am currently doing some background research on the area to determine what might or might not have possible, including what strikes took place in NC. I do think fallout would likely have hit this region from the strikes in Norfolk-Newport News. However I will have a better handle once I finish my research.--Fxgentleman 01:52, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

If you guys don't want it, I'll adopt it. I do believe you both have some good ideas for the region. Mine, mainly, is closer ties with Blue Ridge/Piedmont/East Tennessee/Georgia et al and building some kind of port for mutual use. BrianD 02:02, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

I would like to take a stab at rewriting it, unless you want to jointly work on it. I am just doing research before I do anything.--Fxgentleman 03:38, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

As far as I'm concerned, Fx, that's fine. I do ask that a shared port for use by Outer Banks and the Appalachian states at least be considered. Whether you or South end up developing the article, let me know if I can help. BrianD 03:44, September 7, 2010 (UTC)

I live in Manteo I will gladly take this article Alexanders 15:03, March 24, 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Alex. Thanks for the offer, but we've got it handled right now. However, since you live on the islands, you knowledge of he area is valuable. Are you familiar with the history of the area? The information I was able to gather was sparse. If your family has been living there a long time, maybe you could ask them about the 1980's. Also, you could help in just getting an idea of the lay of the land. How many people are living there in the height of tourist season, for example? (That would give us an idea of the capacity of the islands to support a larger population over time.) Also, how much contact do islanders have with people on the mainland, as a rule? The proposals for Elizabeth City and Inner Banks need that information to be viable. Sorry, I'm coming at you pretty fast. Just be assured that your help is welcome. SouthWriter 19:07, March 24, 2011 (UTC)

Well as for the Tourists about 300,000 inhabit the Beaches at any given time in the summer,

Alexanders 02:54, March 25, 2011 (UTC)

Manteo has grown in the past decades, the tourism business booming after the Four Hundread Year Anivrssery of the Roanoke Colony. In the pre World War scenario fishing was the primary industry and it would be in a scenario like this. Alexanders 02:54, March 25, 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your input, Alex. Is the summer population for the whole summer (coming and going) or at one time? I'm looking for capacity. Of course, the scenario begins after Labor Day, so I'm thinking the hotels and things would not be stocked up with a lot of supplies. Are there any cruise ships that have ports in the islands that might have been able to sail to the Caribbean or Bermuda? SouthWriter 04:32, March 25, 2011 (UTC)
There are not any cruise ships, there are several helicopter ports and two airports, the summer population is for the whole summer, at the same time in 1983 the tourist industry was only starting to take hold, the Winter Population would have been around 15,000-20,000 then. Alexanders 22:36, March 25, 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. It seems appropriate that the birthplace of powered flight would have two airports. It's a shame that neither was much good in the Outer Banks after only a short while due to lack of aviation fuel. I suppose, though, light planes could be used occasionally. However, in this time line, these societies seemed to be isolationist. For some reason flights out seem to be almost unheard of in most places for almost twenty years. Well, anyway, we can go with the scenario for a lot of interesting "local color." In the early years (1600 - 1800), most people never traveled more than 100 miles from home any way. Even in the 1800's, except for explorers and settlers promised "free land," people tended to be born and grow up in their home state.
As for the cruise ships, I was hoping that was part of the tourism there. We have written in about Bermuda fishing boats docking at ports in Delmarva, but contact with the Outer Banks would make just as much sense. It's at least fifty miles closer. The population as I calculated just for the islands was around 22,000, but then I added the population of the mainland counties that were annexed, over doubling the population. As Mitro has presently written Elizabeth City out of the "protectorate" that will have to be revised downward a bit.
Anything you can gather from the history of the area would be greatly appreciated - friends, church, family - whatever sources. Just remember, everything changes on September 25, 1983. SouthWriter 02:06, March 26, 2011 (UTC)

President Basnight

I don't want to have an edit war over the first name, but according to all the sources I have, the honorable Mr. Basnight's first name is Marc, not Mark. He has an article on Wikipedia, and the one footnote that works concurs. If he took office as president in 2003, that would mean he was elected in 2002. He would have been re-elected in 2006, but not eligible for re-election in 2010 unless the constitution of OB departs from the NC Constitiution of 1971 which allowed for 2 consecutive terms for the first time. This should this be changed to 'served since 2006' or perhaps 'having been re-elected in 2010' etc, I can see where it would be difficult for a man to resign after being elected to high office, but if health condidtions require it, that would be best for the republic. SouthWriter 15:45, May 27, 2011 (UTC)

Hmm... well then Marc Basnight will not run for reelection in 2010, Rodney Midgett will run instead, and Robin Mann will be his running mate

Beaufort

Seems from what I learned from LG, creating a new survivor community from Carteret County is out of the question. From what I can tell I am left with two options.

1: Beaufort becomes an independant city-state which opens diplomatic relations with Outer Banks and becomes very close allies.

2: Beaufort starts off as a city-state but later becomes the 8th township of Outer Banks. Experiment632 (talk) 06:12, December 25, 2013 (UTC)

Neither of those. It would be a starting member. Lordganon (talk) 14:42, January 3, 2014 (UTC)

I agree. Maybe OBX can also claim the abandoned Morehead City as well?Experiment632 (talk) 17:35, January 3, 2014 (UTC)

Formal claim, I find doubtful. Only one with a possible claim? Yes. Lordganon (talk) 10:03, January 7, 2014 (UTC)

Maybe Morehead City could be an extension of Beaufort? I can assume the post-DD population of Beaufort would be a bit higher concidering that most of the people from Morehead City will have moved there as well as some from Newport and a few dozen from Havelock/Cherry Point.

Since Atlantic Beach, NC is across the Bogue Sound just south of Morehead City. Due to this, I think the town may well have survived Doomsday and the fire that burned down the national forest. I can see Atlantic Beach being the 9th OBX township and likely a part of Beaufort County (former Carteret County).

Experiment632 (talk) 01:35, January 10, 2014 (UTC)

Outer Banker Marine Force (OBMF)

In the event Beaufort is added, the population would gain several thousand, including USMC service members and their families (those who managed to escape from Cherry Point before it was nuked and the Croatan National Forest before it burned down). When Outer Banks becomes an independent country, the Marines would form the Outer Banker Marine Force (OBMF). The new military organization would be divided into three groups; OBMF-Ground, OBMF-Air, and OBMF-Sea. When Marine scouts explore the abandoned Morehead City, any cargo ships in the harbor would be claimed and retrofitted for OBMF-Sea service. While Outer Banks is a peaceful country, the Marines will most likely have to contend an attack or two by raiders, pirates, a not-so-peaceful community, etc. Experiment632 (talk) 05:21, December 27, 2013 (UTC)

There is really not going to be many, if any, people that get out of that blast and the fires.

And, this is a small state - there is no need or want for such things.

No pirates in this region worth mentioning. Raiders can't really get to the area.

Lordganon (talk) 14:43, January 3, 2014 (UTC)

Okay I see your point. Maybe the OBMF can just be a sort of reserve force? Experiment632 (talk) 16:15, January 3, 2014 (UTC)

Reserves = militia.

Any marines that survived and wished to do so would have formed much of the core of the military and militia.

Lordganon (talk) 10:05, January 7, 2014 (UTC

Outer Banks Flag

Okay I think the OBX flag may need to be modified slightly so that there is an equal amount of stars to the number of townships. I believe there are currently 8 townships correct? Experiment632 (talk) 08:25, January 4, 2014 (UTC)

Would be eight with Beaufort, but there is currently seven of them and the flag has six stars, so it does not seem modifying is needed. Lordganon (talk) 10:06, January 7, 2014 (UTC)

National Conservative Party

Okay this National Conservative Party is very interesting. However little is known how it would apply for OBX. I do know it is based around the ideology of traditionalist conservatism but I am not really sure what that is since I find the Wikipedia article a bit hard to follow. What are their goals for Outer Banks and how much influence do they have?

Experiment632 (talk) 01:14, January 10, 2014 (UTC)

Brazilian Period

How much is Outer Banks affected by Brazil's unofficial colonization of nearby Elizabeth City? The Brazilian Navy would have to have violated Outer Banker waters in order to reach Elizabeth City to begin with. Experiment632 (talk) 01:30, May 17, 2016 (UTC)

This paragraph explains how they got in.  At the time, the inhabitants just did not suspect folks would be come snooping around.  Later on, when they started annexing some of the mainland, this would prove to be a problem.
