I don't know yet (I initially found the saldy for the penny replacement intriguing). The Viking raids would probably restore the timeline unless the Northumbrians developed a fleet. My perfunctory analysis of Northumbrian decline is that the combination of Berht's failed Irish landing (Anglo-Saxon invasion of Ireland - how's that for a POD!) and Ecgfrith's stupid slaughter at Nechtansmere ruined Northumbria's long-term potential.
