bout time South Georgia And South Sandwich Islands got a page. --GOPZACK 21:46, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Trying to get some of those small Islands a page.-Sunkist- 21:57, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

So when did the islands re-establish contact with the "UK" (New Britain)? I would imagine that NB would be interested in sailing out to all the old colonies it had a shot at acquiring. Benkarnell 22:21, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Well if they wanted to they could, I dont see why not. I was thinking about saying around 2009 around June that they made contact by radio, Seeing that the ANZC took back the city in 2008, they could of made contact with the ships, they also could of made contact with St.Helena, or the Trustab Da Cunha Islands (Which I am also working on.)-Sunkist- 22:34, May 27, 2010 (UTC)

Possible mistakes[]

There may be a couple of mistakes here. First (and smallest), September would be the beginning of the Antarctic summer, not the winter. Second, there's no explanation for how the island could contact New Zealand in the 90s when even the Americas were mostly cut off. A fleet of New British explorers looking to reclaim the Empire is more likely, but it could maybe hold off on annexing South Georgia to avoid friction with Argentina. Finally, if Argentina claims the island, I don't think it's likely to get a League of Nations seat. Argentina and its allies would block that. Benkarnell 18:56, February 3, 2011 (UTC)

Review[]

It's funny to see my comment from eleven years ago, but that's not the reason I marked this for review. I find it highly unlikely that Argentina would allow these islands to remain independent for any significant length of time. Argentina claimed them and had occupied them as recently as 1982. It seems absolutely inconceivable that Argentina would not move in quickly now, when Britain was no longer able to defend the islands. The community of Falkland exiles is interesting, so I think the best solution is to make it a temporary thing, a description of the islands for the year or so before Argentina came in. So in the draft that I've just completed, it actually made a lot of sense for ships of the Royal Navy to take the islands in 1987. So no change is necessary to the canonical map, to the membership in the Commonwealth, and so forth. However the islands' era of independence has to be much shorter. Argentina had already invaded, and then in 1990 they were annexed to the Dominion of South Africa at the same time as St Helena and Dependencies. False Dmitri (talk) 12:28, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
